Barbie (Handicapped Cat)'s Story

This is Barbie — and Barbie is not your typical cat.

Barbie is sassy. Barbie is opinionated. Barbie is VERY vocal. And Barbie communicates in ways that are different from most cats.

But before you decide that Barbie is simply a "difficult" cat, you need to know her story.

Barbie arrived at Pet Angel in August of 2023 from Genesee County Animal Control after suffering a broken hind leg. When she arrived at GCAC, their veterinarian believed she would likely need to have the injured leg amputated, and GCAC felt that Pet Angel would be better equipped to help her through that process.

But when Barbie arrived at Pet Angel, our veterinarian was able to save her leg!

Instead of losing it, Barbie spent an entire month with her injured leg in a cast, held completely straight while it healed. Once the cast was removed, she went through physical therapy at the veterinarian's office to learn how to use that leg again. At first, she wouldn't put any weight on it at all. With time and rehabilitation, she began using it again.

Today, Barbie still has a noticeable limp — but she does not let that stop her.

She jumps. She climbs. She explores. She jumps down from high places. She lives her life.

And while Barbie is NOT in pain, we believe everything she went through with that leg has played a role in shaping the very unique cat she is today.

Trauma changes people. ;)

And for Barbie, it seems to have left her with some very strong opinions about how she wants to interact with the world around her.

Barbie communicates differently than other cats. She meows often, but she also hisses and growls — A LOT. With most cats, hissing and growling generally means "please back off." With Barbie, those sounds are simply part of her everyday vocabulary.

She can be growling at you while you're petting her.

She can be hissing while still wanting your attention.

And yes, she can be growling at you while simultaneously PURRING because she is enjoying herself.

That doesn't mean her communication should be ignored. Barbie's forever human will need to learn the difference between her everyday vocalizations and the moments when she truly wants space. Her adopter will need to pay attention to her body language, respect her boundaries, and learn what *Barbie's* individual signals mean instead of assuming every hiss or growl means the same thing.

That is a big part of what makes Barbie different.

And it is also why she needs a very specific person.

Barbie needs an experienced cat owner who is patient, observant, compassionate, and willing to learn her language. She needs someone who will not expect her to behave like a "typical" cat, and who understands that getting to know Barbie means learning *her* rather than constantly asking her to change.

Because once you understand Barbie, you discover a whole lot of sweetness underneath all that sass.

Barbie LOVES being petted. In fact, getting attention from her favorite humans is one of her favorite things in the entire world. She will happily soak up pets and, in typical Barbie fashion, will make sure you know when you aren't petting her enough!

She loves catnip toys — especially Yeowww! bananas — and enjoys batting at stick toys. She likes to explore and adventure around despite her limp. She is a BIG fan of wet food and cat treats. She enjoys her fluffy cat beds and loves curling up inside hidey holes. She enjoys being brushed, and yes, Barbie loves sitting on laps!

But once Barbie is on your lap, you have apparently made a legally binding agreement to remain there.

Try to get up and Barbie will let you know EXACTLY how she feels about that decision.

She is a character.

Barbie also has some physical accommodations that her forever human will need to understand. She does not like her back hips being touched, and we recommend avoiding scratching around the area where her tail meets her body. Her limp may be permanent, and her adopter should be prepared to accommodate her physical needs as she gets older.

Pet staircases or ramps will be important accommodations so she can continue getting onto furniture, looking out windows, and getting into bed as jumping becomes more difficult with age.

Her handicap does not require daily medication or special medical treatments right now. It simply means her forever home needs to be willing to make some thoughtful accommodations for her and understand that she moves through the world a little differently.

And Barbie needs her home to be just as specific as she is.

She needs to be the ONLY pet.

No cats. No dogs. No other animals.

She also needs a home without children.

Barbie needs an experienced cat owner who is comfortable with a cat who has strong opinions, communicates loudly, and may not always respond the way a "typical" cat would.

Her person needs to be willing to learn.

Not just learn how to pet her.

Not just learn what food she likes.

But learn *Barbie.*

Learn what her different sounds mean. Learn when she wants attention. Learn when she has had enough. Learn which parts of her body she doesn't want touched. Learn how to make accommodations for her leg. Learn how to give her choices and allow her to feel safe.

Most importantly, Barbie needs someone who understands that bringing her home means learning to accommodate *her* — rather than expecting Barbie to simply adjust herself to whatever household she is placed into.

She isn't looking for someone who will tolerate her differences while hoping she eventually becomes easier.

She is looking for someone who will genuinely appreciate them.

Barbie may not be the right cat for a first-time cat owner. She may not be the right cat for someone looking for an easygoing, universally affectionate cat who rarely has an opinion.

But for the experienced cat person who enjoys getting to know an individual cat on a deeper level — who thinks learning a cat's quirks and communication is part of the fun — Barbie could be an incredibly special companion.

Because underneath the hissing, growling, limping, yelling, lap demands, and VERY strong opinions is a girl who has been through a lot and still wants to trust someone.

She wants to feel safe.

She wants to be understood.

She wants to be loved exactly as she is.

Barbie has been waiting since August of 2023 for the person who will look at her and see something special instead of something difficult.

Maybe that person is you.

Barbie is fixed, microchipped, up to date on her vaccinations, and negative for FIV/FeLV.

If you are an experienced cat owner who understands that some cats need you to learn *their* language — and you think you could give this sassy, sweet, wonderfully unusual girl the forever home she needs — please submit an adoption application at:

https://petangeladoption.com/adopt-a-cat
