August's Story

Hi, my name is August. I am estimated to be about 8 years old. I came to the shelter 11/4/25 as part of a cruelty case. I was confined to a cat carrier for as long as I can remember. I had no litter box, no bed, no blanket, nothing. Just food and sometimes water. Being in a cage my whole life has made my depth perception be thrown completely off. My eyesight isn't the best unfortunately, and I am almost completely blind. Staff will let me smell them before touching me, but I never really know that it's a person that I'm smelling, until they try to pet me. I get so scared and jump because I don’t realize there was even someone standing in front of me trying to touch me in the first place. I’ve never been in a home, and with my vision impairment, I think I’m going to be best as a companion, versus a best friend. I mean I'm sure once I'm comfortable in a home, that with time, my family will be able to pet me without me getting jump scared, but I just don't want to get anybody's hopes up. I know what it feels like to be let down, and I don't want my future family to ever feel that way. So if you’re a patient person, who will give me the appropriate amount of time to adjust, please consider coming to meet me

Montgomery County SPCA's Adoption Policy
At the Montgomery County SPCA, we are dedicated to finding responsible, forever homes for all the pets in our care. To that end, we have created a thorough adoption process which helps us achieve this goal. This process includes a check of veterinary history records on any pets you currently have, and a home visit. If you rent your home, we require written proof (letter or lease) from your landlord that you are allowed to have pets. We undertake this kind of thorough review to ensure that animals who have already been discarded at least once will never have to experience this again.
