Arda - Winterville, GA's Story
"NO TOUCHY THE KITTY!" says Arda. Oh, Arda, what are we gonna do with you? Contrary to what Arda says, she's actually very sweet, much preferring to evade instead of being defensive. The trick is that she's REALLY good at evading, and she's one of the smartest cats we've ever fostered. She is FRUSTRATINGLY good at staying just out of arm's reach, and will even come over to check you out and give you a sniff (or even give your fingers a few licks) if she can tell you're not in a position to snatch her up. Giving all the other cats pets and making her jealous used to work, until she wised up that we specifically wanted to pet HER. How dare we, she thought. Treats used to work, until she wised up to our antics. How dare we bribe her! Toys? Same story. Oh, Arda, why are you like this?

Arda is a momma cat whose kittens have long been adopted. She's 100% a spoiled house cat with a 5 gallon bucket full of personality. She sleeps on our pillows during the day, she chirps and meows at us at meal time, she loves toys and will pick up socks and slippers and walk around the house yowling with them. She loves our big resident male cat, tolerates the others residents, and teaches kittens to respect their elders like it's her day job. She also knows how things work around here, and will suffer no fools...she makes eye contact like no cat you've ever met, reads your body language with precision, and can tell you want to pet her before you've even made the decision to try. "NO TOUCHY THE KITTY!" she says as she evades you. Fortunately, she almost never gets defensive, and when she does, she's not a biter or scratcher...she'll just raise a paw and threaten to whack you, and it's usually *just* a threat. All posture, no action, which is good to know when she's under the couch and need to pull her out for her annual vet appointment...*sigh*. It's actually quite endearing to us that after chasing her around for 20 minutes and having to drag her out against her will for a vet appointment that she doesn't want to harm us in any way.

Here's the frustrating part. Arda LIKES attention. Once you catch her, she only half-heartedly tries to get away, purrs like crazy, and loooooves cheek rubs. She used to be jealous of the other cats getting pets and would join in for some sweet scritchies, only to realize IT'S THE HUMAN giving the pets and run away. Oh, Arda, are we really that horrible?

We think her defenses can be broken. Truly. We've turned similar cases into proper house cats, but Arda has thus far resisted, probably because she wises up to our strategies too quickly. Arda needs someone who can be patient with her and likes a challenge. Willing to give some space sometimes, but also press her boundaries. We can certainly talk strategies for that task, but minimizing her places to hide/evade you, and interacting with her regularly with treats/toys is key. In her current foster home, her foster parents are usually spread thin with the other kitties, and it's hard to make time to work with her.

Are you up to the Arda challenge? Can you touchy the kitty? If not, no worries, as she's welcome in her current foster home for as long as it takes (with all her personality, she's kind of a riot to have around, to be honest), but we are happy to work extensively with anyone who wants to give it a shot!

Adoption Application - http://fs17.formsite.com/cofas/catform/

All of our cats and kittens are fostered in homes so we know their personalities. They are spayed or neutered, tested for FIV and FeLV, up to date on shots, microchipped, de-wormed, and on flea preventative. Our goal is to match our fosters with the best home possible.

The adoption fees for our felines are as follows: $150 for kittens (or 2 for $250); $100 for adult cats (or 2 for $170); and $75 each for our special seniors/FIV+ kitties. Please email cofaspets@gmail.com for more information.

Not yet ready to adopt? You can sponsor a pet now to help pay for medical expenses, special diets, toys and treats, emergency medical care, etc. Our adoption fee rarely covers our expenses, so any size donation is appreciated!
