Angel's Story

At the end of January our Spay and Neuter Director, Linn received a most horrifying phone call.  Our dear friend and volunteer from Boone County, Dorthea “Thea” Smith had passed away.  Thea was a great animal activist and cat lover and will be deeply missed.  She was known to take in cats that would have never made it in high volume shelters. She provided these cats with love, vet care, and sanctuary.  Several of these cats were positive for Feline Leukemia Virus.  Those who were not positive were vaccinated against the disease and were kept separate from the others. Thea’s family is asking for help in finding homes for some of the cats.  There are eight cats that have tested positive for Feline Leukemia and five cats that have been found free of the disease.   A.P.E. is helping the family with some “with owner” placements as we are currently not taking in new animals A.P.E. will provide the preventative vet care, (flea meds, vaccines, etc.) for cats that are adopted or cats that are placed into a Temporary Adoption situation (similar to foster care.)  A.P.E. will also assist with food for temporary placements homes when donated food is available. Her family gave us this information on this cat, “Angel is approximate 11 years old.  He has gum problems (gingivitis) and has lost some teeth.  He is pretty, but high maintenance [with the respect to grooming] due to his long hair.  He has been neutered, but I do not know if he has a chip.” He is not infected with Feline leukemia. If you are interested in adoption or helping the family by giving the cat a temporary adoption please contact A.P.E. at 515-460-7729 or via e-mail united4ape@hotmail.com October 12, 2013, 12:41 pm
