Winnie's Story

Meet Winnie! A Blue Fronted Amazon that found her way to us from a living situation which couldn't be sustained. Winnie is estimated to be approximately 10yo. While we didn't sex test her, she is believed to be a female.

To kick start this off Winnie requires a home with parrot experience and will need to supply her with an appropriate size cage.

Winnie’s adoption will be $600 covering her vetting, toys, food, and some perches which will be provided before going to her new home! Information on dietary needs will be included with adoption!

Winnie was tested for three big things: psittacosis (Avian Chlamydia), AGY (Avian Gastric Yeast), and Bornavirus.

Winnie came back positive for Bornavirus, which we are told almost 80% of birds tested in captivity carry, but most never exhibit signs. This means the vet recommends Winnie should not be housed near other birds and if so, properly quarantined from them due to this being something physically transmitted. However, it is pretty "fragile" and can be sanitized relatively easily. We are also told, many people don't test for this, and the % is likely higher but undiagnosed.

There are many many many parrots in captivity that carry Bornavirus and live a long happy and healthy life without issue. It is important to educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of Bornavirus and know what to watch for.

Again, a large percent of parrots in captivity test positive for Bornavirus, and lots of them live long, happy, unaffected lives!! We believe it is important to be transparent before an adoption, know all the facts, and for the new adopter to understand their commitment.

We also found out that Winnies left wing was injured some odd years ago causing her flight feathers to be incapable of growing in on her left wing, so Winnie will never fly.

We received Winnie with little to no information other than her coming from another home (unfortunately we couldn't get a contact for), her "only stepping up on a dowel", her "walking around the apartment all the time", and lastly her 75% sunflower seed diet with a cage a bit too small.

During the time of her being here at the shelter we have introduced her to her first ever toys, naturalistic perches, and rope perches to our knowledge, which she was scared of at first but has come to love! On day 4 she was stepping right up onto anyone's hands who would offer. As much as someone should be prepared to be possibly bit by any parrot, this one won't do it to save her life, she is extremely gentle and will only grasp or touch you with little pressure while making the typical upset amazon noise, to show she's uncomfortable. We have been working Zupreem Natural and Harrisons into her diet.

Winnie again, is a very sweet blue fronted amazon, like most parrots she is going to need time to acclimate to a new environment and people, so she's going to be quiet, at first... until she's comfortable. Then the party will begin, you will get to learn and love her big personality, she will keep you entertained for hours, and you will have the opportunity to love this sweet bird the way we have.

What does everyday care look like for a bird like this, cleaning poop from perches, changing papers, giving fresh water/food, refilling foraging toys, giving chop (veggies & bean mix), lots of noise, sweeping broken toys, and social time.

Winnie will NOT be going to just any home, but rather the perfect home for her, as she is still pretty young and many amazon parrots live past 75 years of age.

Switching from one home to another can be damaging to parrots to an extreme. Winnie is now going to technically go to her fourth home we are aware of and we would like to ensure it's her last. It is important to note that Winnie will be going to a forever home that is ready for the lifelong commitment of a parrot!

SOOO, if you think you’re the perfect forever home for this feathery friend, contact the Blackstone Valley Animal Control at 508-883-BVAC (2822) or email aco@blackstonepolice.org.
