Tembo's Story

"Mother Nature painted the sky a warm golden color which reflected on the mirror like calmness of the Zambezi River this dawn." Tembo, the larger than life pigeon, rode proudly on the back of his friend the Great African Bush elephant. He swayed with the easy smooth steps of the elephant as they made their way to the banks for morning breakfast. "Jambo jambo Tembo,” the animals of Africa greeted their friend with a cheerful "hello." Another glorious day begins on the coastal plain of Africa. Beautiful Tembo is a lovely pigeon whose name means "elephant" in Kiswahili. Two bronze sunsets have caught a likeness in Tembo's eyes...deep and soft and lovingly longing for a forever home. Tembo has survived "stringfoot." This is a term to describe pigeons’ feet that have become entangled in foreign matter such as hair, dental floss, yarn, and other materials that are cast off by humans as waste. It can be very painful, and at times the birds can loose toes. Rescued and relieved to feel better, Tembo is now waiting his chance to become a member of a special family. Bahati njema Tembo. Good fortune is just around the corner.
