I could tell her previous owner had neglected her. At first, she was very interactive. She came onto my bed and kissed my forehead, enjoyed head scratches, and was social. Then, after a month or two she became less interactive and was territorial over her cage, but when I was able to coax her out, she was fine - she did step up, kisses, loved to climb on mom..wasn't a super fan of head scratches anymore, but I could nuzzle up to her. (Also, I am assuming Sydney is a girl by her behavior). Something happened at my place of residence, and I had to move out abruptly. My roommate, who had also formed a bond with her, took over her care. I was devastated, but I thought she would take good care of Sydney. I was wrong: she didn't spend enough time with her; she didn't continue to train her or interact with her. She would spend maybe 5 minutes with her a few times a day. So, naturally, Sydney began to regress over the course of 5 months. When she is out of the cage, she is the sweetest thing, but inside, she is territorial and lunges. She doesn't bite, but she'll give you a warning lunge or nip. Although interestingly, she will perch on her cage door or on top of her cage and kiss your cheek or forehead for a long time when you present your face. Just not your finger. Fingers and hands are evil! LOL.
Why are you needing to rehome your bird?
Sydney is a beautiful Quaker Parrot who needs a devoted, patient, and consistent forever home. Her past experiences have been difficult, and she carries the weight of that trauma, but beneath her insecurities is a bird capable of immense love and companionship. More than anything, Sydney craves security and human connection, and she longs for a committed friend who understands the time it takes to heal and build trust.
?When she feels safe and forms a bond, Sydney truly opens up. She has the sweetest nature, known for gently kissing your cheek or forehead, and she adores nuzzling close to the person she trusts. Once she is out of her enclosure, she is described as the "sweetest thing," enjoying climbing and always seeking to be in the same room as her caregiver, desperate for that consistent interaction and love.
?For an intelligent parrot with a complicated history, patience and boundaries are essential. Due to her past, Sydney can be territorial inside her cage, expressing her anxiety through a warning lunge or nip. This is her way of communicating a need for space and security; she is not a biting bird, and this protective behavior subsides completely when she is outside her cage and engaging with you. Similarly, she currently views hands and fingers with suspicion. Her ideal adopter will be someone experienced with parrots, prepared to patiently use perches or step-up sticks, and focused on building trust slowly and lovingly.
