Rico's Story

Meet Rico! This handsome fella is estimated to be around 15 years old. He came to us through one of our local animal control partners, so while his past is a bit of a mystery, he's made it very clear who he is--and what he's looking for in his forever home.

Playful, active, and full of personality, Rico loves being in the middle of the action. He's happiest when his cage door is open so he can supervise the household, show off his beautiful feathers, and entertain everyone with his dancing skills. He thrives on attention, whether you're offering treats, watching him enthusiastically play with his toys, or giving him plenty of head scritches (his favorite way to start the morning!).

Once Rico trusts his person, he forms a deep bond. He happily steps up, snuggles against their chest, and enjoys spending as much time together as possible. He has traditionally shown a preference for one person (particularly women) and tends to bond very strongly, so patience, consistency, and continued socialization will be important for helping him build confidence with others. The good news is that he's become much more comfortable around new people and will now happily accept treats from them.

Rico is a smart bird who enjoys learning. He's mastered shaking hands with his foot and proudly offers it on cue. He's also been working on peekaboo games with a towel to help build his confidence, and he has made great progress.

Like many macaws, Rico can still bluff when he's frightened or overly excited, so an experienced bird owner who understands macaw body language will help him continue to succeed. He also has a healthy set of lungs and isn't shy about using them... especially if he's asking for treats or attention. Because of his flock calls, he will need a home without shared walls, such as an apartment or condo.

Enrichment is a huge part of Rico's happiness. He loves playing "fetch" by tossing a ball off his perch for his favorite person to retrieve. New toys are always exciting, especially soft dog toys that crinkle or squeak, and he never tires of chewing on wood. His future family should be prepared to provide plenty of toys and rotate them often to keep him engaged.

Rico eats a healthy diet of Harrison's and Zupreem Natural pellets along with a wide variety of fresh chop, fruits, and vegetables. His favorite treats include dehydrated banana chips, almonds, pistachios, and pine nuts. Bath time is another favorite activity! He enjoys showering on a perch with his favorite person, loves being misted with a spray bottle, and will often try to drink from the sprayer while he's at it.

The ideal home for Rico will provide lots of daily interaction, generous out-of-cage time, and someone who won't be intimidated by normal macaw antics. In return, Rico offers endless entertainment, affection, intelligence, and companionship. For the person willing to earn his trust, he'll become a loyal best friend who fills every day with personality and laughter.

Adoption fee: $700
