Ricki's Story

Meet Ricki, a Lesser Sulfur Crested Cockatoo who has somehow been waiting for his home for three years, and we truly do not understand why!!!

Ricki is estimated to be in his fabulous 20s and is bursting with personality. He is energetic, expressive, and full of character, bringing music, movement, and conversation wherever he goes. Ricki is not a quiet bird and proudly uses his voice, so a home without shared walls is a must.

Ricki is missing a few toes on one foot, but it does not slow him down. He is a confident climber and does best with flat or rope perches that give him extra stability. He prefers stepping onto an arm rather than a hand, which helps him feel secure and balanced.

Once Ricki bonds with someone, he is endlessly entertaining and affectionate in his own cockatoo way. He greets his people with phrases like "Hi Ricki boo-boo!" and "Ricki needs a cracky!" and offers a convincing dog bark impression just for fun. He loves music, dancing, singing along with his people, and being part of whatever is happening around him.

Ricki continues to grow more comfortable in foster care, and his feather condition has improved dramatically over time with the right routine and environment. His plucking has decreased significantly, and he is clearly thriving with consistency and understanding.

He eats Harrison's pellets enthusiastically and loves Nutriberries and walnuts. He can be picky when introduced to new foods, so patience and persistence are helpful when expanding his diet.

Ricki would do best with someone who has experience with large birds, especially cockatoos, and who understands how to move at his pace and read his cues. For the right home, Ricki offers big personality, big emotions, and big rewards. After three years of waiting, we are hopeful that his perfect match is finally out there.

Ricki is available for adoption to Missouri residents only.
Adoption Fee: $300

STAR - St. Louis Avian Rescue's Adoption Policy
Please note, due to the quantity of emails that we receive, simply "starting an inquiry" will not receive a reply. Please email info@staravian.org if you have a specific question. The first step is to fill out an Adoption Application, which can be found on our website. All birds are in volunteer foster homes, and a meeting may not be set up until you are approved to adopt. Our adoption team will process your application and set up a home visit. All current pets (including any birds cockatiel and larger) must be up to date on yearly wellness exams and any state mandated vaccines. We do not ship birds, and have a 100-mile adoption radius (using St. Louis Lambert Airport as the start point). We do not adopt to breeders. We are not able to adopt birds into homes that use Teflon product or smoke due to toxicity dangers.
