Piper's Story

Piper is a charming 10-year-old Scarlet Macaw with a sharp mind, a quiet nature, and plenty of personality packed into those brilliant red feathers. While many people expect macaws to be loud, Piper happily breaks the stereotype. She prefers chatting softly to herself, greeting the ringing phone with a cheerful "hello," and whispering "Hi, Piper" before bedtime. She's the kind of bird who enjoys being part of the household without needing to be the center of attention every moment.

Piper is an independent girl who likes to be the tallest thing in the room, surveying everything from her favorite perch. When she's not perched up high, she's often exploring on foot like a curious little dinosaur, making her way across the floor to investigate her surroundings. She also loves chewing wooden toys and shower time-- give her a cool shower (yes, cool, she told us so!) a couple of times a week, and you'll have one very happy macaw.

Although she's comfortable around people, Piper believes trust should be earned. She readily steps up for most women and has been making wonderful progress building confidence with her foster family. She can be cautious around men, likely due to past experiences, but she's already shown she's willing to change her mind when someone approaches her with patience, kindness, and (perhaps most importantly) an almond. Piper is excellent at communicating how she's feeling through her body language and appreciates people who listen when she politely says she's had enough.

Like many rescued birds, Piper is still working through a few challenges. She's learning to expand her palate beyond pellets and is continuing to build positive experiences with training. She has a history of feather plucking and chronic egg-laying, both of which are being carefully managed. She is also positive for Avian Bornavirus. Her future family should be prepared to work with an experienced avian veterinarian to monitor her ongoing health needs.

Piper would do best with someone who understands large parrots, or is committed to learning about them. She isn't looking for perfection, just a calm, confident person who will respect her boundaries, celebrate her progress, and let her settle in at her own pace. She would likely thrive as the only bird in the home, where she can enjoy being the ruler of her queendom.

If you're looking for a clever, observant companion with a gentle voice, a big heart, and the intelligence to keep you on your toes, Piper just might be waiting for you.

Adoption fee: $750
