Ollie (must be adopted with his friend, Scruffy)'s Story

Ollie and Scruffy are a delightful pair of Goffin's Cockatoos whose friendship is as special as they are. After overcoming a difficult start, these best buddies are looking for a patient forever home where they can continue sharing life's adventures together.

Ollie is a playful little guy who enjoys entertaining himself as much as the people watching him. One of his favorite games is pulling back a plastic ball toy and letting it swing into the side of his cage, usually followed by happy chirps and enthusiastic wing stretches. He's also becoming quite the expert at shredding his large hemp rope. Ollie is especially fond of banana and blueberries, carefully peeling pieces of banana before taking his time to enjoy every bite. He is beginning to grow more confident each day and will happily sit nearby enjoying a favorite treat while his foster mom sits beside the cage. He's getting ready to take the next big step in his journey by learning to step onto a human hand.

Scruffy is the braver of the two and is always eager to explore. One of his greatest joys is enthusiastically shredding the hanging phone books in his cage, celebrating each successful page with a happy toot and excited wing flaps. He also enjoys supervised out-of-cage time, happily running around on top of the cage before making his way to a nearby parrot tree, where he's developed quite a taste for healthy Nutri-Berries. Scruffy's growing confidence has encouraged Ollie to venture out for treats too. Both boys clearly enjoy music and can often be found bobbing along whenever a favorite tune comes on.

While Ollie and Scruffy are still a little cautious around people, they continue to make wonderful progress in foster care. Their foster mom is patiently building trust through positive reinforcement training, helping them gain confidence one small success at a time.

Ollie and Scruffy came to PEARL as part of a rescue involving four parrots living in heartbreaking conditions. During their intake quarantine they had to be housed separately while awaiting veterinary clearance. At first, they didn't appear particularly attached to one another, so they were placed in different foster homes. It didn't take long for both birds to make their feelings known—they missed each other terribly. Once reunited, it became clear just how strong their bond really was. Today they happily share a home again, and they will need to be adopted together. They're definitely not shy about letting everyone know when they're apart!

These beautiful cockatoos will thrive in a patient home that will give them the time, understanding, and loving environment they deserve.

About the species: Goffin's Cockatoos (Cacatua goffiniana), also known as Tanimbar Cockatoos, are among the smallest of the white cockatoo species. Native to Indonesia's Tanimbar Islands, they are recognized by their white plumage, expressive dark eyes, pale pink coloring around the beak, and compact, athletic build. Highly intelligent and naturally curious, Goffin's Cockatoos are known for their remarkable problem-solving abilities and playful personalities.

Goffin's Cockatoos thrive on daily interaction, mental enrichment, and opportunities to explore their surroundings. They enjoy climbing, chewing, foraging, and manipulating toys that challenge their inquisitive minds. While affectionate and social, they also tend to be active, independent thinkers who benefit from learning, exploration, and positive reinforcement. Like all cockatoos, Goffin's are considered a dusty species, producing a fine feather powder (powder down) that helps maintain their plumage. Regular cleaning, good air circulation, and HEPA air purifiers can help manage feather dust in the home. Keep in mind that in general, cockatoos can be loud, and their vocalizations mainly occur in the morning and evening. It is normal for parrots to call out to their flock mates first thing in the morning and at the end of the day.

With proper care, companion Goffin's Cockatoos commonly live 35–50 years, making them a significant long-term commitment. Because of their intelligence, curiosity, and active nature, they benefit from daily social interaction, mental stimulation, and opportunities for exercise both inside and outside their enclosure. To promote healthy movement and comfort, PEARL requires adopters to provide a cage that is at least 1.5 times the bird's adult wingspan in width, depth, and height, with larger enclosures always encouraged. This standard is based on the bird's ability to comfortably extend and flap its wings while inside the cage.

A spacious enclosure is especially important for an active pair like Ollie and Scruffy. In their foster home they happily share an 80" × 40" × 80" enclosure filled with a variety of perches and enrichment toys, along with supervised out-of-cage time each day to explore and exercise.

Because of their intelligence, activity level, and strong social nature, they benefit from daily interaction, mental stimulation, and opportunities for exercise both inside and outside their enclosure. By considering adoption you are helping put an end to this crisis affecting companion parrots in the United States. In order to adopt from PEARL, all potential adopters must complete our three step adoption process. This includes an application, participation in our Standards of Care Class, and consent to a home check. Regardless of whether you have had or currently have birds, classes are required. We want to ensure that all our potential adopters are equipped with the knowledge to properly care for a parrot. During these classes we discuss our expectations on caging, diet, enrichment, training, and so much more.
