Nino

Nino is maybe the sweetest, friendliest, happiest duck we have ever met. He is an indian runner duck and is TINY—only about 2.5 pounds!! He will follow you around and “quack quack quack” and bob his head to tell you how happy he is to see you (and if you bob your head back, expect him to jump right into your lap with glee! Also, check out the video of him kissing his foster mom!) However, he is not an imprint and very much likes the company of other birds as well, and would LOVE a duck girlfriend. Nino is not afraid of other animals, and currently lives indoors with cats and a pigeon. We think he would similarly be fine with kids or dogs. He is not skittish around new people like so many ducks, and rather craves both human and bird company (he just does not want to be alone). Every night when his humans are on the couch, he curls up in his little dog bed right at their feet (he turns in circles a few times before sitting down, just like dog). When he’s feeling silly, he runs laps around the living room while flapping his wings like he’s pretending to fly—it is ADORABLE!! He goes CRAZY for red grapes, blueberries, and earthworms. Unfortunately due to improper care before he was rescued (likely poor nutrition and no access to water) his feather quality has remained poor and he has not undergone a full molt (and may never). Therefore, his feathers are patchy and not water-proofed and as a result he cannot be outside unless it’s warm out, as he absolutely cannot tolerate the cold. Therefore, Nino needs a home where he can live inside when it’s cold (including most nights) and go outside into a safe enclosure (without other male ducks who might beat him up) during the days when it’s warm outside. He isn’t crazy about water (which isn’t helping his feathers) so we hope another duck can teach him how to splash around on warm days! Ideally Nino would go to a home where a female duck can live the indoor/outdoor life with him. Nino is healthy and has been checked out by an avian vet. We will provide you with all the information you need about caring for an indoor duck, including how to best clean up after them and protect their feet from hard floors. Nino’s love and joy are truly infectious and it is simply impossible not to smile when you are with him. All he wants to do is snuggle up on something soft and sit near you—and he is wonderful company with his sweet duck smile and bubbly personality. He will thank you every day for being his family.
