Max's Story
Meet Max! He is one half of an unlikely duo. What's the joke about the Amazon and Moloccan who walk into a bar?...

Max is estimated to be about 42 years old, with an unknown history. What we do know is that his owner recently passed away and Max, along with his cockatoo bestie Tinker, was transferred to us by local animal control. While they were shy and uncertain at first, as any bird would be with such abrupt change of circumstances, they have gradually settled into foster care and made apparent their individual personalities.

Max is the less outgoing of the two, in typical Amazon fashion. He is a bit more guarded with interactions, although once he warms up, he will step up and ask for head scratches. His foster Max is particularly dependent upon Tinker for companionship and will call out if she leaves his sight. As long as he can see her, he is a very quiet, content little bird!

When Max first came to us, he had a very large and ulcerated mass around his cloaca. This was impacting his quality of life and with the threat of it potentially growing even larger, we opted to have it surgically removed. He did very well after surgery and tolerated everything perfectly! We did a biopsy on his mass and it was a benign lipoma that is seen commonly in older birds, particularly Amazons. It can be caused by a variety of different factors, like diet and obesity, so it is just something to keep a close eye on in the future. For his adoptive home, diet, exercise, and regular veterinary care will help to prevent recurrence.

Max and Tinker are very closely bonded and will need to be adopted together. Although they do not share a cage, they enjoy each other's company and have been in the same household for a very long time. Outside of the cage, Max even preens Tinker and seems particularly dependent upon her for companionship. They will need a patient home that understands large parrot behavior, respects boundaries, and is patient enough to understand that winning Max's trust might take some time.

Max and Tinker's combined adoption fee is $500.
