Irving's Story

Irving got tangled in bird netting — one of those "humane" barriers strung along ledges and eaves that's meant to keep birds out and mostly just traps them. It rarely works as intended, but it reliably injures and kills the birds who blunder into it. Irving fought to free himself and paid for it: both wings were left with deep gashes. When he came into rescue, we honestly weren't sure he'd ever fly again.

He proved us wrong. As the wounds healed, he started lifting off around his foster mom's apartment, and he hasn't looked back. For a young bird who nearly lost the sky, he's made up his mind to use every inch of it — no shelf, curtain rod, or doorway goes unvisited.

He's a handsome little thing, too. Deep charcoal, near-black across the head, neck, and breast, with wings a full shade lighter in ash and silvery grey. You can bet he knows just how cute he is in his pigeon pants!!

Irving shares his name with Irving Berlin, the man who wrote "Blue Skies" — a good fit for a bird who got his own flight back against the odds. He will thrive with someone ready for an enthusiastic flier: a bird-proofed space with room to stretch those hard-won wings, and plenty of out-of-cage time, safely inside your home or aviary, to spend doing the very thing he almost lost. If you've got the room and the patience for a young explorer, Irving is ready to fill it!
