Grover's Story

Grover is an approximately 31-year-old DNA-sexed Male Blue-Fronted Amazon. He has been thoroughly vet checked, including bloodwork. We are working on his diet and getting his feathers looking pristine. He is a great talker and looooves red pepper!

Amazons can be wonderful, fun, energetic birds to have in your home and family. Unfortunately, because of their beauty and reputation to be "talkers," they are often purchased by families that aren't necessarily educated or experienced enough to deal with their specific needs. A lot of them wind up plucking or even biting their families and then find their way to a rescue when the family can no longer care for them. By the time birds come to CARE, they may have already been rehomed multiple times and/or have suffered emotional trauma.

Our responsibility to these birds is to find them forever homes where they can flourish and live a healthy, happy life. To that end, we will not accept applications for our Amazons from those who have never owned large birds. Applicants with personal Amazon experience will be given precedence as Amazons require families who can meet their specific needs like mental stimulation, foraging opportunities, lots of out of cage play time, and understand that not all Amazons are like the talking ones you see on YouTube. Some birds may never feel comfortable talking, but that doesn't make them any less worthy of a loving home. The best way to gain experience is to volunteer! We are always accepting new volunteer applications!

Grover's adoption fee is $500.

If you are interested in adoption, please go to www.centerforanimalrehab.org, read our Adoption Policies, and fill out the Adoption Application. Once your application is approved, we will set up a meet and greet with you/your family.

We are located in Waukesha, WI and do not ship. All adopters must live within a 100 mile radius. We do not adopt birds to households that have the opposite gender birds.

Center for Animal Rehabilitation & Education Inc.'s Adoption Policy
Adoption applications must be completed online. There are separate applications based on the type of pet you're interested in - bird, dog, or small animal. All the applications can be found here. Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed by our Board members for approval. Processing applications may involve background checks, veterinarian references, communication with landlord(s) as applicable, and generally will be completed within one week. Additional data may be requested such as: pictures of existing bird cages, video tours of the home, or a home visit. Applications with incomplete data may be delayed or denied. If approved, one of our Adoption Coordinators will reach out to schedule a meet-and-greet appointment with the suitable bird(s)/dog(s)/small animal(s). This enables us to assign you a dedicated Adoption Coordinator who will assist you in finding the perfect family member. They will ensure all your questions are addressed before committing to a new pet. Your Adoption Coordinator can also assist in selecting a cage, perches, toys, and pet food during your appointment. We adopted this model in 2020 and firmly believe it's the most effective way to serve you and match our animals with their forever home. In some cases, more than one meeting with the animal(s) may be required, at CARE's discretion. Only individuals with approved adoption applications and current volunteers are permitted to handle our birds, even through the cage bars. Ensuring the safety of our birds is our utmost priority, and failure to comply with our policies may result in being asked to leave. If we don't currently have a pet that is the right fit, your application remains on file with CARE: three months for birds and small animals, one year for dogs.
