Gianni's Story

Gianni’s rescue began with two little girls who saw a pigeon who needed help and did something about it. They picked him up, carried him down the street, and walked into the nearest vet clinic — which happened to be where GLPR volunteer and veterinarian Nikki Gianni works. Of all the vet clinics in Chicago, in all the neighborhoods, they walked into that one. Gianni was, from the very beginning, a bird with good luck disguised as bad luck.
Nikki took X-rays and found what the wing had been hiding: a break that had healed on its own, improperly, leaving him unable to fly the way a pigeon is meant to. It wasn’t a new injury by the time he arrived. He had been out there managing it for a while, doing what birds do, adapting. He’s good at that.
He is also, by all accounts, a lot. Healthy, sassy, and deeply curious — the kind of bird who needs to know what’s happening at all times and has feelings about it. He has transitioned to his nonflighted life with the energy of someone who has simply redirected rather than diminished: everything he might have put into flying is now invested in exploring his immediate surroundings, having opinions, and making those opinions known. He is not a background bird. He is a foreground bird, with commentary!
Named for the volunteer whose clinic became his turning point, Gianni needs a home that can appreciate a curious, engaged, opinionated pigeon who has fully committed to living his best ground-level life. He’s not waiting around to feel sorry for himself. He has things to look into and a forever home to prepare for!
