Diego's Story

Diego is a DNA-Sexed Male Jenday Conure. About a year and a half ago, Diego was purchased from 7 Mile Fair by someone who believed they were bringing home a baby bird. But when Diego was surrendered to CARE, we could tell right away that he was definitely not a youngster. He had a very worn leg band, so we started investigating the markings on the band. We were eventually able to determine that Diego was hatched in Puerto Rico in 2008, making this handsome boy 18 years old!

And while 18 years may sound like a long time, we can't help but wonder how much of that time Diego truly got to experience being a bird.
He was kept in a small cage with just one small wooden dowel perch. He didn't have the space, variety, or enrichment that every bird deserves.

Diego has been medically cleared and is settling into his new life at CARE. He has a much larger cage, different types of perches for his feet, and LOTS of toys to discover. Some of it is still new and a little confusing to him. We're watching him learn how to play, explore, and figure out what all these wonderful new things are!

We're still getting to know Diego's personality, but that's one of the most rewarding parts of rescue — watching a bird slowly realize that life can be different.

Diego is 18 years old, but we believe he still has so much life left to live. We would love nothing more than to see him spend those years in a home that will cherish him, give him the enrichment he has missed, and love him for exactly who he is.
Could you be the person who gives Diego the second chance he deserves?

Diego's adoption fee is $400.

If you are interested in adoption, please go to www.centerforanimalrehab.org, read our Adoption Policies, and fill out the Adoption Application. Once your application is approved, we will set up a meet and greet with you/your family.

We are located in Waukesha, WI and do not ship. All adopters must live within a 100 mile radius. We do not adopt birds to households that have the opposite gender birds.

Center for Animal Rehabilitation & Education Inc.'s Adoption Policy
Adoption applications must be completed online. There are separate applications based on the type of pet you're interested in - bird, dog, or small animal. All the applications can be found here. Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed by our Board members for approval. Processing applications may involve background checks, veterinarian references, communication with landlord(s) as applicable, and generally will be completed within one week. Additional data may be requested such as: pictures of existing bird cages, video tours of the home, or a home visit. Applications with incomplete data may be delayed or denied. If approved, one of our Adoption Coordinators will reach out to schedule a meet-and-greet appointment with the suitable bird(s)/dog(s)/small animal(s). This enables us to assign you a dedicated Adoption Coordinator who will assist you in finding the perfect family member. They will ensure all your questions are addressed before committing to a new pet. Your Adoption Coordinator can also assist in selecting a cage, perches, toys, and pet food during your appointment. We adopted this model in 2020 and firmly believe it's the most effective way to serve you and match our animals with their forever home. In some cases, more than one meeting with the animal(s) may be required, at CARE's discretion. Only individuals with approved adoption applications and current volunteers are permitted to handle our birds, even through the cage bars. Ensuring the safety of our birds is our utmost priority, and failure to comply with our policies may result in being asked to leave. If we don't currently have a pet that is the right fit, your application remains on file with CARE: three months for birds and small animals, one year for dogs.
