Deniro's Story

Deniro is a 7-9 mos old bantam rooster with silkie feathering. All of our roosters get along.

Background:
We rescued 150+ young chicks from an elderly couple's property. They had fell on hard times and were unable to collect eggs for a couple of months. This resulted in 200+ chicks being hatched. All are bantams.

We found placement for many of them and have about 45 remaining. They are now 7-9 months old.

In the interest of transparency, these birds have been exposed to Marek’s. Out of the flock of 150 we took in, one passed away from neural Marek’s. Three tested positive and were moved to our sanctuary (we have a flock with a Marek ’s-positive case).

While the other birds tested were negative for Marek’s, a negative test does not mean they do not have Marek’s.

The last bird who was symptomatic was in November. We opted to keep the birds for three months and, if no other bird exhibited symptoms, to offer them for placement.

No other bird has shown any symptoms of the disease, and all are currently healthy.

Marek’s is a ubiquitous virus that virtually all birds with outdoor access are exposed to.

That said, it is important for you to have this information to determine your comfort level.

Application: https://animalplace.org/adopt/adoptable-chickens/
