Cara's Story

Meet Cara, a confident Blue and Gold Macaw with a strong personality, a soft cuddly side, and a very clear opinion about how her day should go.

Cara spent her entire 24 years in one home, bonded closely to a single owner, and she is still adjusting to a new environment and new routines. She has made wonderful progress in foster care, but she has very clearly chosen a preferred person and can be protective of them. With someone unfamiliar or hesitant around a large macaw beak, she may try to bluff or push boundaries, so confidence and calm handling are important.

She is hand tame and steps up reliably for her foster most of the time. She will occasionally step up for others with encouragement, and continued positive socialization in her forever home will be important. Cara is independent and not shy about saying no when she is comfortable where she is or simply not in the mood. Her body language is clear and honest, which makes it easier for an experienced or confident adopter to respect her boundaries and work with her successfully.

Cara is affectionate with her chosen person and enjoys cuddling, spending time on her favorite play stand, and watching the world through the window. She also has a willful streak and is known for sneaking onto the top of her cage, especially when she knows she is not supposed to be there. She is very smart, very determined, and used to getting her way, and she is learning to adjust to a more structured household routine.

Vocally, Cara is loud and will not be a good fit for homes with shared walls. She screams for attention, when she wakes up, when she sees people approaching the door, and when she is hungry. These are usually short bursts rather than extended screaming fits, but they are frequent and very much macaw behavior.

Cara would do best with someone who is confident around large parrots, understands bluffing behavior, and is not easily intimidated. While she does not necessarily require prior macaw experience, she does need an adopter who can remain calm, consistent, and firm while also offering patience, structure, and plenty of positive reinforcement. For the right person, Cara is a sweet, expressive companion with a big personality and an even bigger presence in the home.
Adoption Fee: $600

STAR - St. Louis Avian Rescue's Adoption Policy
Please note, due to the quantity of emails that we receive, simply "starting an inquiry" will not receive a reply. Please email info@staravian.org if you have a specific question. The first step is to fill out an Adoption Application, which can be found on our website. All birds are in volunteer foster homes, and a meeting may not be set up until you are approved to adopt. Our adoption team will process your application and set up a home visit. All current pets (including any birds cockatiel and larger) must be up to date on yearly wellness exams and any state mandated vaccines. We do not ship birds, and have a 100-mile adoption radius (using St. Louis Lambert Airport as the start point). We do not adopt to breeders. We are not able to adopt birds into homes that use Teflon product or smoke due to toxicity dangers.
