His relinquishing owner writes:

“Seeking the Right Home for Angel – A Beloved Umbrella Cockatoo

We have gone round and round over this decision for the last year and it’s not one we've come to lightly. Over three years ago, we adopted Angel with the full intention of being his forever home. We love him dearly—he has become part of our family—and no matter what happens next, he will always have a home here.
That said, during his time with us, we’ve come to realize that Angel has behaviors and needs that make life in our household difficult for both him and us. These challenges don’t come from a lack of love or effort, but from a growing awareness that our home environment may not be the best match for who he is, what he's been through, and what he needs to thrive.

Angel is a beautiful, 33-year-old male Umbrella Cockatoo. As far as I know, we are his fourth home. He came to us sweet but temperamental, and over time we’ve learned just how complex and sensitive he is. Like many cockatoos, he can be affectionate and loving, but also loud, demanding, and prone to mood swings. His behavior seems to stem from a combination of past experiences and natural cockatoo tendencies. Angel tends to prefer to be alone with music or a TV show on or hanging out with only 1 or 2 people singing, playing peek-a-boo, or stock piling toys in a cave of blankets. He is easily overwhelmed if too many people are around, if one of our dogs that he doesn't like enters the room, or if he has been socializing too long. He has injured everyone in the house at least once though I have never felt that he had the intention of hurting anyone (He is not a mean-spirited bird at all!), rather he was just reacting to his anxiety and was letting us know he was overwhelmed. He is very much about his routines. He will insist on being let out of his cage in the morning (he likes to sleep in a covered cage) and be put to bed around the same time each day. If routine is broken you and your neighbors will hear about it! He has some kind of feud with toilet paper and paper towel rolls so try not to let him see you holding a roll! This feud also includes some water/juice/ soda bottles and occasional random types/colors of shoes. He has a lot quirks but he has many good qualities as well.

Unfortunately, due to his behaviors and difficulty with family members being scared of him, we are now exploring whether there might be a more suitable home out there for him—one with someone experienced in working with large parrots, ideally someone familiar with the unique challenges that come with Umbrella Cockatoos. This is not about giving up on Angel. It’s about trying to do right by him. I feel I owe it to him to explore all options for a happier, more compatible life.

Angel deserves a patient, knowledgeable person who can provide the time, space, and structure he needs. He is not a beginner bird. He requires consistency, attention, and someone who understands the long-term commitment and emotional complexity of cockatoos.

If you believe you might be the right fit for Angel, or know someone who is, I’d be grateful to hear from you. I’m happy to discuss his personality, needs, and history in more detail. My goal is not just to rehome him, but to find a place where he can truly thrive.

Thank you for taking the time to read this—and for understanding how much this decision means to us and to Angel.”

** To apply for Angel, please download the application from http://www.alaskabirdclub.org/aab_forms.shtml
... fill out, and attach document copy and paste into an email to:
adoption@alaskabirdclub.org **
