Meet Bonbon and Chocolate

Bonbon and Chocolate are an adorable pair of Netherland Dwarf sisters turned into LAAS by a breeder because they were ill. We received word that these two were at risk of euthanasia at the shelter due to Upper Respiratory Infections (URI), and we quickly rescued them from that fate. They have been in a special needs foster home for several months in order to recover. It became apparent upon their arrival that there was more going on than just an ordinary URI.

Both girls smelled as if they had been living in manure and they had congestion in both their nasal passages and in their chests. Bonbon, in particular, seemed to be having trouble seeing clearly, as she would often bump into things, and would “shadow” her sister in order to find her way around. They were taken to our very skilled exotic veterinarian who placed them on antibiotics, pain medications, anti-parasitic medications and eye drops. Both girls needed medication for eye infections and Bonbon’s retina was detached due to infection. These were two very sick little girls.

After several weeks of treatment and several antibiotic cocktails, we were finally able to get these babies over their very significant illness and their vision has improved. They both see clearly when foster mommy approaches with food, treats or affection, and they are eager to accept them! However, they are still medically fragile. Other issues often associated with irresponsible breeding have become
apparent. It is a sad truth that breeders often try to breed into their animals traits that are desirable. In the case of Bonbon and Chocolate, it appears that the breeder has been trying to breed very small bunnies. These two are very small, at only about two pounds each, and they have small little heads with very large
soulful eyes. Gorgeous and very desirable traits for Netherland Dwarfs. But unfortunately, such manipulations often come at a big price for these little creatures. Their little heads are too small to fit all their teeth in properly, resulting in extreme dental issues.

At present, Bonbon and Chocolate are going in once per month (approximately) for molar trims. It is hopeful that as they become more adept at eating hay and munching on high fiber treats, they will improve their ability to wear down their molars naturally, but they will always need to be monitored and checked for molar issues and any potential adopter must be aware that this is a serious issue for them. They are very small and cannot lose much weight due to the inability to chew properly before they will be seriously at risk. Consequently, Bonbon
and Chocolate are classified as a SPECIAL NEEDS BUNNIES due to their dental issues. It is very sad that human-made problems exist for these sweet creatures and it is up to us to help them with these problems.

It is truly amazing how sweet and innocent these girls are despite all they have
gone through. They love one another so dearly and spend so much time cuddling and leaning on one another that it brings a tear to the eye and melts the heart. When they run up to you for pets or treats, it is so rewarding. When they first came to us, they were so frightened of human contact. Both girls have made friends with the cats and grown very used to the loud barking of the dogs in the household. They have their favorite treats and love their little house and bunny bed. They have come a long, long way from the place where they had such a rough start in this life.We are certain the right person is out there waiting to welcome these special girls into their family.
