Hello, my name is Tala! I came into MUR's care in May of 2021 in a lot of pain and almost unable to walk. It's been a long road, but I've finally been medically cleared for adoption. I've got so much to tell you about me! I know I come with many requirements, but I promise to be your loyal best friend for the rest of my days. After all I've been through, it's all I just want my own forever best friend.

When I came in, I was quickly checked by veterinarians to figure out what was going on. I had severe hip dysplasia and a slipped disc in my back. I have the typical "dropped" hind end that some poorly bred shepherds have, and because of my hips, I was lacking the muscle mass to support myself. The good vets at Winnipeg Animal Emergency Hospital helped me get bilateral femoral head ostectomies done to provide relief, and after some rest, I went into rehabilitation with Head To Tail Pet Rehabilitation to gain strength, muscle and mobility back. I have continued to go to rehab for laser therapy and hydrotherapy (underwater treadmill) to make sure that I stay as strong as possible. I love my human friends at rehab - they have so many treatos! It would be in my best interest for my forever family to continue with my program (the rescue said this will help my quality of life!).

Like many other shepherds, I have a bit of a sensitive tummy. I'm currently on a special diet and medications to make sure my guts stay healthy (and so my poops stay nice for you!). I have some urinary incontinence issues, but they are super well controlled with medication. I do take pain medications as well. Because of the cost of my ongoing care, the rescue has waived my adoption fee for the right home. If you want more information about my medical status, please contact the rescue.

But let's talk more about who I am! I've learned that my kennel is my safe space, and I am good about being in it, and I never have accidents in the house. My leash manners have improved a ton, but I still sometimes forget my manners. I can be reactive on leash to other dogs and small creatures, but I can be redirected and have been working on my "Leave It" and "Let's Go" commands. My foster mom says I'm doing way better!

I prefer a home where I am the only animal. Other dogs are just not something I want in my space, and cats are way too fun to chase. I hear little kids can be fun, but they make me uncomfortable. I'd prefer a home with people who can understand me, so a home with children over 16 years of age is best.

I'm a pretty easy-going girl in the home and enjoy spending sunny summer days outside relaxing with my humans. I really like walks and going for a good sniff (and this activity is good to keep my muscles strong)! I enjoy lounging and getting belly rubs. I enjoy car rides, but I need to be buckled in for safety (I love them so much that I can get overexcited!). I'm very sharp and smart - you could probably teach me some new tricks!

I may be older and have more needs than other dogs up for adoption, but give me a chance. Send in your adoption application to meet me, and I'll show you I'm the dog for you!

Apply to adopt me: www.manitobaunderdogs.org/adopt/adoption-application.

PLEASE NOTE: Because we do not have a public shelter, an adoption application must be filled out in order to be approved to meet any of our animals available for adoption. No exceptions. Serious inquiries only.
