Meet Wolfie & Chaco

This is Wolfie and Chaco, 4 year old German Shepherd/Lab/Husky mixed breeds.
I know this is a longer than normal post about any of our available dogs, but I feel the more information I give up front, the less questions people will ask about them if they are considering adopting them.
Roseys Rescue pulled them from Pender County Animal Shelter - Pender Pets back in April after their owner passed away and the bonded brothers were surrendered to the shelter March 28th.
When they were at the shelter they were terrified and spent their time hiding in the dog house. They tested positive for heartworms and were going to be hard to find a home for because they are bonded and very large dogs!
I couldn't leave them there knowing how scared they were and that their world was turned upside down when their owner died.
I brought them home and at first Chaco (the gold colored one), was distant and wouldn't make eye contact, and Wolfie was too scared to let me pet him. (The 3rd photo is the day I got them out of the shelter and they were scared).
In the beginning they didn't respond to their names and while they were getting used to everything they were cautious and standoffish.
Chaco is the more confident of the 2, and whenever they are separated he looks for Wolfie.
After a few days of decompression and an established schedule, they opened up and while Wolfie was still a little hesitant, Chaco was ready to make friends with me!
Chaco is the Alpha of the 2 and can be protective of Wolfie who is more submissive. He's not protective in an aggressive way, but just constantly looks back for Wolfie if he loses sight of him.
These boys are just about the sweetest 2 dogs you will ever meet and once they get to know you they are so predictable and easy to love. They are mostly low maintenance, but do get very excited when it's time to be let out and eat.
These are some big boys, Chaco weighs 90 pounds and Wolfie weighs about 75 pounds. But don't let their size intimidate you. They are some of the easiest fosters I have had here. They are very obedient and easy to recall.
They have been treated for the heartworms, are neutered, up to date on vaccines, wormed and microchipped.
I was told when I picked them up that the staff at the shelter was told they lived outside, but I am not 100% sure about that. Since they have been with me they have demonstrated that they do not like to use the bathroom in their kennel and will "hold it" overnight until I let them out in the play yard in the morning while I clean their kennel and prepare their meal. They also don't use the bathroom all during the day and wait until I let them out in the play yard in the afternoon as well. As soon as I open their door they both make a mad dash for the grass in the play yard and use the bathroom and then come to me to be fed their canned food from a fork! If I put the bowl down, Wolfie won't eat and lets Chaco eat it all, but if I sit down and feed them forkfuls alternatively, they both get to eat. All 3 of us look forward to this time together. If they are not housebroken, they will be very easy to housetrain as they are so predictable and go to the bathroom before they eat without exception.
After they eat I give them both lots of treats and they share them with each other nicely.
They do everything together. They eat together, use the bathroom together, sleep together, walk beside each other and are never out of each others sight.
Wolfie is adorable when he carries around his "baby", his stuffed sloth which he even takes to potty with him! He will always bring me his baby and if he forgets it, he gets so happy when I give it back to him. Wolfie still tends to be cautious when showing affection to me, but once I gently pull him towards me and caress his face and rub his ears, he will put his nose to my face and give me a little lick. He sometimes shakes if you approach him too quickly and he's unsure of what you want from him.
Chaco is the more serious of the 2 and while he really loves me and will immediately come to me for affection and a hug, he promptly goes and finds Wolfie and does his business before coming back for more affection.
Neither of these dogs "play" and have shown no interest in playing catch or tug of war. After they eat their meals and finish their treats, they just lay around. They come when called and they both know their names. They don't know any basic commands and I never force any dogs to learn them. I do suspect that they would be fairly easy to train as they want to please and love a treat!
They have not been face to face with any of my cats, as my cats are mostly seniors and I refuse to subject them to putting them with dogs to see if the dogs are reactive. They generally ignore any cats they see on the property unless they hear other dogs start barking and then they will bark until I tell them to stop.
As far as other dogs, I have not put them with other dogs here, but they ignore Ramsey and Ashtar and will run back and forth following whoever is out at the time in the play yard.
Chaco and Grace do not like each other as Grace is VERY alpha and will get in another dogs face to challenge them every chance she gets. They have had a few arguments when Grace is in a challenging mood, but otherwise they ignore each other.
OH, and Chaco has the BIGGEST bark you can imagine! I am confident that anyone who doesn't know them and he barks at them, would be scared of him, but he really is just a big baby!
I have tossed around the idea of finding them a home separately as I think Wolfie would do ok without Chaco after some time, but Chaco would likely get depressed and after spending all this time with them, I am confident they would do best if kept together.
They are not destructive at all and do not "mark" their territory.
They are each others best friend and keep each other company.
That does not keep them from creating a bond with me or any other human who they meet.
Anyone who decided to adopt these boys would not regret making them a part of the family. They are just wonderful dogs with great dispositions and loving personalities.
They are happy and well adjusted dogs and will bring much love and happiness to anyone who takes a chance on them.
You just gotta not mind a lot of dog hair as they both have thick undercoats and now that they are blowing their coats, there are so many tufts of dog hair! Even when they get brushed, they still shed quite a bit.
They are not too fond of the water and don't really like a bath or the wading pool. They run from the water hose. So they would not make good beach or boat dogs.
They are happy to hang out in the shade in the yard but they do dig holes in the dirt if left unattended to lay in. They stop as soon as I tell them no.
They were terrified of riding in the car at first, but now will get in a lot easier. Wolfie tends to hide his face but Chaco now will look out the window and come up behind me to put his face out the window.
I think I covered just about everything. I'm sure someone will ask a question I didn't cover, but that always happens! LOL
If you are interested in 2 really great dogs and don't mind the shedding, you can meet these 2 at Pet Supplies Plus - North Wilmington, NC on Saturdays.
