Meet Winnie

Winnie was surrendered to a local vet clinic by her owner

Her complex had a lot of dogs and Winnie was attacked a few times and then became reactive on leash on walks

Winnie is a 5 yr old spayed female golden retriever and lab mix

She was not crated in her home, she was okay loose

She sits, lays down, shake paw and comes when asked.

She was raised by a single person and would thrive in an adult home with people that can give her her own space and use positive reinforcement to build her confidence

When new people move in quick to her she does get scared and jumps back, then slowly approaches smells then and is all good.

At my home she was good with my dogs and foster dogs

If she is charged her on lead on walks and then she's understandably defensive with barks to ask that her space be respected

She came to my home and started to want to play with my dogs within 4 days

She was very sad about being given up

She is a very good girl

She is now in foster care in Port Elgin

Her foster sent this:

She knows our routine better than we do. Morning, afternoon, and evening walk. And she knows almost to the minute when she should be going. She still is reactive to some dogs on those walks but we know how to mitigate the reaction somewhat if we have enough time before we get too close. A firm no as well as breaking her attention and bringing her focus back to us works most of the time. She seems to react to dogs that are  also  reactive.

Another time we had a dog come charging out of their house and we had no time to prepare and they were nose to nose and Winnie had no bad reaction.

She does need a fenced yard. Any animal that she sees in our yard or out on our walks is one she either chases or wants to chase. On our evening walk one night last week a skunk jumped out from the cover of a neighbour’s house and it took all my strength to keep her from tearing off after it. And she tracked it until she couldn’t see it anymore. And when we came back to that spot on our return she was looking for it.

She remains very well behaved in the house. Likes to keep me company in the kitchen when I’m cooking. She is very interested in food. Loves her food and treats.

Observations of Winnie

IN THE HOUSE:
Her conduct in the house has been excellent.
She has shown no destructive tendencies.
When left alone from an hour to 4-5 hours, she has been fine.
When she first got here she counter-surfed once.
She was told to get down and she has never repeated that behaviour.
She is very food curious so keeping the garbage lid closed and the dishwasher closed is recommended.
We have a two storey house and all of our previous dogs have had the full run of the main level but were not permitted upstairs. Winnie tried once to come upstairs and when told no she obeyed and has never tried to come upstairs again.
She has a bed downstairs in the living room and sleeps there for the entire night.

ROUTINE AND WALKS:
She is very routine oriented. When it gets light enough in the morning, she goes for a short walk and does her morning ‘duties’ and then comes home and has her breakfast.
We split her 4 cups of food a day between the morning and the evening.
Most mornings she has a play date in the yard.
The big walk of the day is in the afternoon.
We time it between 2 & 4 each day.
She will come looking for us at that time of the day if we aren’t already getting ready for that walk.
Walk is an hour to an hour and a half.In the evening (8-10pm), she has a short walk for the final ‘duties’ of the day.
She enjoys her walks.
She is very aware of her surroundings on her walks and she is very interested in any wildlife we come across (squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, etc.)
Must anticipate this or be prepared for an intense and sometimes rapid pull on the leash.
Winnie sometimes has leash reactivity when meeting other dogs on her walks.
If we have enough notice of another dog coming near, we will change our route.
However, sometimes we encounter other dogs suddenly on trails with blind turns so meeting is guaranteed.
Many times she will respond to calmly telling her to ‘leave-it’ and holding tightly on her harness and rewarding her afterward with a treat. If the other dog shows reactivity then Winnie will also react in kind.
There are times when she doesn’t react to the other dog at all.
So it is a behaviour that seems random at times.
Generally we keep her away from people and other dogs on walks.
CATS AND OTHER WILDLIFE: Took her to our daughter’s home at Christmas time for a day long visit.
They have a resident cat. The cat spent most of her day on her cat ‘tree’.
However, when the cat finally came down, Winnie did chase her.
The cat went to the second level of the house and Winnie tried to follow but we called her back and she obeyed.
We had a stray cat in the yard one day and she chased the cat to a neighbours yard 2 houses away. She came back right away when I called her urgently. So a secure fence would be best.
She chases squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits here in the yard.
On her walks she seems to know that she can’t chase them but she keeps an eye on them and if close to them will lunge at them while they run up the nearest tree.
KIDS:We haven’t had her around children. All I can say is that when we play she will get excited and her play can be a bit rough. She gets ‘mouthy’ and doesn’t know how to be gentle with balls and sticks when returning them to the thrower. She has inadvertently nipped me quite hard when returning a ball. She sometimes will jump up on you when pursuing a ball or a stick you might have in your hand.If you have treats then the ball or stick will be dropped most of the time. So I think she could be trained to play nicely with time and patience and lots of treats! But because of her speed and strength I think that younger children would not be a good fit for her.
CARS: really doesn’t like travelling. She pants and shakes the whole time she is in the vehicle. Will not lay down.
The longest trip we made over the holidays was 1.5 hours.
She sat the whole time and panted and shook.
Would not lay down.
Tried reassurance but that didn’t seem to help her anxiety.
ATTACHMENT:  When she first came home with us she would only walk with me.
It took about 4-6 weeks before my husband could walk her solo. He takes her on the morning walk solo and I take her on the evening walk solo.
The afternoon walk we both walk with her.
HER IDIOSYNCRASIES:
She doesn’t like her paws being touched. So you can’t trim her nails. I’ve tried a few times to get her comfortable with the paws being touched and handled but she hasn’t changed her behaviour in that regard.
When she is stressed she will start to pant and yawn almost immediately.
BATHING: We have a walk-in shower inside our back door and so for all of our dogs it’s always been a quick and easy way to get them in the shower quickly after a walk.
Winnie would come home with a belly coated with road debris so she was quite compliant in going into the shower and having her belly and legs washed most days.
She hasn’t had a full bath yet but the signs are encouraging that she will be OK in having a bath/shower.
EATING:
Eats twice a day.Morning and evening. 2 cups per feeding as per instructions on dog food package.
We have liver treats for good walking behaviour and good behaviour in the yard
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS OF WINNIE:
She is a good dog in so many ways.
Once comfortable with you she is loyal and obedient.
She doesn’t show a lot of affection but when she sees you in the morning or after an absence her tail does a lot of wagging and she is happy to see you for sure.
She is quiet in the house if she isn’t excited.
We don’t play with her in the house.
Playing is an outdoor thing.
BARKING:
She has only done it a few times here in the house.
When someone knocked at the door and once when she heard a noise outside the house.

Sleeping at night: she is quiet and stays very close to her bed.
She doesn’t roam around the house at night.
She needs a quiet house with adults who know dog behaviour and aren’t afraid of the reactivity she occasionally shows.

She is very smart and observant of everything you do.

Because of her car anxiety, she probably needs a home where there isn’t a lot of travelling initially (so she can see she is not going for a ride to be dumped at the vets).

We have a quiet home with few visitors at this time of year.

When we took her to our daughter’s home at Xmas she was fine with the two adults in the home.
The infant baby she kind of ignored.
Winnie will thrive in a home with knowledgeable dog people.

A quiet environment (both house and community) would probably be best.

Her love is a quiet one but she will give a lot of it to the right family.

For my time with her:
Winnie is a really good girl who when given a little time to trust loves the idea of shaking a paw or getting a treat, and happily wants to play with other dogs
...............................................................
She was surrendered by her owner to a vet clinic

She would be great in a home with people that can read and comprehend body language to understand when she is scared

She would thrive with positive reinforcement training methods only

Winnie is fearful of being harmed and should not be in a home with a lot of chaos, or loud noises

She is shy enough to try to back away from you initially then quickly comes to trust

She is housetrained

She doesn't chew

She takes treats nicely

She was fine with me in a vehicle

She walks nicely for me on leash

She is a 5 year old golden retriever and golden lab mix

She is fully vetted

She has been having a lot of fun with my dogs and foster dog and enjoys laying or running around in the fenced yard

Winnie needs a forever home with a fenced yard
