TRIPP American Staffordshire Terrier Millerstown, PA

Tripp is a 4-year-old, neutered American Staffordshire Terrier. Tripp is house trained, loves to go for walks, car rides, to run and play. Tripp responds well to commands--sit, stay, shake, lay down when rewarded with treats (which he loves).

Tripp came to us 3+ years ago from a hoarding situation with many other animals. He was adopted at approx. 9 months old and 55 lbs. Now, his adopter can no longer keep him. He has never shown aggression to or dislike of male humans, and was affectionate to her husband until lately. But now Tripp growls at the husband when he walks into the room. The husband is currently in poor and declining health. We believe this is what is triggering Tripp's behavior--he can sense the husband's compromised health.

Tripp tends to fixate on other animals, even bugs, but when called off, he responds properly, promptly. (Overall, he just does not like other animals.)

We do not recommend Tripp for a first-time dog owner. He needs someone who basically understands dogs and has experience providing what they need. Someone who is confident being the Alfa. The adopter was unable to take this role for Tripp. In our view, maybe was too soft on him, and by her own admission, did not carry through with the basic training Tripp received here at PCoAR. Tripp is smart. He will naturally assert control if no one else does. But he will respond if someone is the clear Alfa.
