We have to say it. Teddy is just one regal looking Beagle. We think he knows it too. Think of the older King, a statesman and in charge. Teddy has those vibes.
Around 27 lbs, ~3.5 years, he has been with us a while giving us the chance to get to know him. Teddy came to us a bit overweight and we tried our normal diet techniques. without accomplishing much but making him HANGRY. You see Teddy is a curmudgeon, a tad more stubborn than the normal beagle boy, think old basset? Teddy wants what he wants and isn’t afraid to push the envelope to get it. This worried us a bit but volunteer Jonathan saw something in the stubborn more seasoned than his years boy. Not only did we do thyroid bloodwork as thyroid can make dogs cranky but also hooked him up with a trainer. Jonathon sponsored his training and has been working with him since through evaluation and pointers the last few months. They go at least twice a week on long walks at Lake Shore and car rides, both of which he loves. He has made many new dog friends on these outings and some humans too.
We do know this, with Teddy, if he doesn’t want to go into his kennel he won’t and will make his displeasure known by a look, maybe a growl and a head swivel. He has scared a couple volunteers with this but since his food change to Royal Canin Weight loss, a high filling, lower calorie food he has become a lot less hangry. A couple food pieces in the crate, to the gate and he is more like thick putty in your hands.
He dances for a walk when he sees his harness and leash. He does pretty well with the other beagles that come and go but lets the whippersnappers know he is a BOSS.
He loves chews, is pretty reliable in his kennel on a schedule and we feel once had a home either an owner that let him rule the roost.
Teddy is seeking the right home, one that will continue the work and an owner that he can respect and vice versa. An experienced dog owner a must, would love a fenced yard as he enjoys being out on a nice day. Active that walks, he would love a walking partner. He likes kids when he meets them but we feel small children day to day may not get his signals or understand when he needs his space.
Update: Teddy is in foster with Jonathan and family. He is completely housebroken, has become best friends with his foster brother and sister beagle. Teddy is gentle in their house and is good with sharing food with the other dogs. He loves playing with their male beagle in the yard and hunting with their beagles. Teddy has excellent manners except when he really wants to stay outside in their fenced yard hunting. He will grumble or give them the side eye and they redirect him with food or give him a couple of minutes and he is then his usual sweet natured self.
