My name is Tanner. I was found as a stray in Virginia, so we don’t know much about my past. I’m around 2-3 years old and weigh about 40 pounds, which is just the right size - not too big and not too small! I am currently living in a foster home in Upstate New York. I get along great with other dogs, but the shelter says that I was afraid of the cats I met there.

I currently lack the exuberance of many pointers and tend to be calmer, quieter, and more reserved in my behavior. However, this could change over time since I’m still learning all the ins and outs of being an indoor dog. I am currently living with four other dogs and they have been helpful in showing me the ropes.

I’m still learning to trust people. I am shy when meeting new people and facing new situations. I get spooked by sudden movements. I’m a bit like a new kid on the first day of school, reserved at first, not so much out of fear, but simply from the unfamiliarity with new routines and surroundings. However, once I warm up, I am super sweet and loving.

Outside is where my true personality really shines! I have just the right amount of energy with plenty of get-up-and-go and love walking, running and hiking. I also love to sprint around the yard and play with my canine pals. It would be great if my new home has at least one other playful, confident dog for me to socialize with. Have I mentioned that I love toys and chasing balls? Also, I am pretty keen on wildlife and do not have reliable recall yet, so a securely fenced yard is required to keep me safe. You know how hard it is for us dogs to resist the temptation of a bird, squirrel or bunny.

Inside, I am calm and well behaved. My foster folks tell me I’m very smart. I am housebroken and crate trained. I sleep quietly through the night. I rarely make a peep even when the other dogs in the house do. I don’t mind being in my crate. In fact, it’s my safe zone when I’m feeling insecure, but I’m beginning to prefer the couches and beds. I am a great eater and I love treats. I’m no longer teething, but I still like to exercise my jaws and need appropriate things to chew to keep my teeth and gums clean and healthy for life.

Given time, patience, and a calm and confident person to show me the way, I have all the makings to be a wonderful companion. I have come a long way in a short time, but will need someone who is committed to continuing to build my trust and confidence.

I am fully-grown and weigh 42 pounds. I am neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and tested negative for heartworms. I am currently on monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. I am very well behaved for bathing, brushing, and nail trimming.
