Meet Shelby

Shelby, with a DOB of: 11/4/2023, was surrendered to Mattie's Place when his people could no longer keep him. They had originally purchased him off Kijiji. He was loaded with roundworms as most puppies are from backyard breeders and Kijiji sellers, and the young people that bought him were not prepared for all it takes to raise a puppy.

Shelby is noted on his medical records as being a Cane Corso mix. I don't know what his "mix" is.

At his 1st vet appointment, 1/22/2024, he weighed in at 10.5 pounds.

At his next Mattie’s Place vet appointment, for his neuter and vaccine boosters, March 12th, he weighed in at 14 kg / 31 pounds.

I'll guess he'll be in the 60 - 70 pound range as a fully grown adult dog, though a typical male Cane Corso can weigh in at 100+ pounds, but I don’t believe he’ll be that large.

Shelby is a very confident puppy. He can be assertive when he wants something but he also has a very calm and sweet nature. Training and socialization will be critical to help to shape Shelby's temperament and ensure he's guided to the softer side of his personality, so an adopter that is excited about professional training and helping their dog be the best dog they can be is important.

Shelby will need a large dog breed experienced adopter and preference will be given to those with power breed experience. The adolescence stages of a Cane Corso will require an tremendous amount of patience, structure and consistency and an adopter willing to work through those crucial times will be important.

Cane Corso's are an incredibly sensitive breed, so leading and training with kindness will produce the best results. Daily training and socialization beginning now for Shelby and continuing throughout his entire life will be very important.

Though they are big dogs, they are higher energy dogs, so daily activity and mental stimulation as outlets to fulfil their high energy and intelligence needs are critical. Daily walks and hikes along with a lot of sniffing, exploring and training will make for a very satisfied Cane Corso dog.

Cane Corso's do have dominant personalities, so Shelby will need an adopter that can be a respected handler. You will need to be able to give Shelby structure and consistency and ensure he understands boundaries and expectations. You must be able to respect his potential large size and strength but also not be intimidated by what may come as he matures into an adult dog. You do not want Shelby setting his own rules as an adult dog.

Though Shelby is a mixed breed dog it's important to focus on the breed we know is in there, though he can be watered down by being a mutt on many of the Cane Corso personality traits, but they also may shine through as he gets older, so it must be addressed from the start.

He'll need a home with a secured fenced in backyard or a country property. He'll need a home with older kids or no kids or possibility of young kids joining the home as I don't want him returned because babies come along years down the road and he's no longer a fit. That said, he has been exposed to a 2 year old without issue, so visiting kids are fine if dog respectful.

FROM HIS FOSTER (UPDATED APRIL 3):

Shelby is doing so well.

He is quite social. He is very food motivated. He loves to cuddle. He follows me everywhere. He comes when called and can sit and lay down.

He is very observant and curious. He is also patient. He will stand outside the bathroom door when you’re having a shower, etc. or come in and wait patiently.

He gets along well with the adult male dog in the home and will not challenge him when he gives corrections to help Shelby learn to be respectful.

He is quite playful and recently started fetching the ball for me in the backyard.

He’s a great sleeper as well and sleeps through the night.

To sum it up, he is a beautiful dog both outside and inside. Somebody will be very lucky to welcome him into their home. He’s a great dog and honestly I would love to keep him if I could.

I will truly miss him.
