When puppies are first born into our world, they do not innately understand the human voice, human touch nor humans in general. Puppies must be socialized in order to understand the domestic world as we know it. The window of socialization for puppies closes at 4-4.5 months of age. Whatever has not been introduced to a puppy during that window, is alien and can be frightening to a puppy. For example: Adult dogs who fear fireworks and thunder were not introduced to fireworks and thunder during their window of socialization as puppies.

Shane was deprived of that necessary socialization as a puppy. She was raised with a group of outside dogs, and food was thrown at them, literally. Then one day the owners decided they didn't want their dogs anymore and decided to cast gentle Shane into a high-kill shelter. One can only imagine how frightening that powerful shift in her life must have been for her. That's where we came in. The shelter notified us that if we did not rescue Shane she would be euthanized the next morning.

When Shane first arrived to our rescue she was petrified. She cowered when affection was approaching her. With not a mean bone in her body, her only solace was running to the door so she could be outside during her playtime with her group of dog friends here.

It has taken considerable time, time and gentle practices for Shane to finally relate to humans. Every day we are witnessing Shane develop into a confident, happy girl with the fears that tormented her of the past. Mike, our employee who works one night a week, took Shane under his wing. As seen in the landmark video taken last fall, Mike earned Shane's trust. Every day since, Shane evolves more and more. She wags her tail as she now trusts humans she knows and even willingly approaches people for affection! She's ready. She's ready to move on to a family who will provide her love, and in turn, will receive fulfillment like no other that their dog will continue to progress with heartfelt devotion to her people.
