Meet Reese Cocoapup

Reese Cocoapup is developing into a kind, polite little gentledog. He is respectful toward the other dogs in his foster home, is affectionate and playful with his foster mom, and is generally easy to be around when with people he knows in a familiar environment.

HISTORY
The five Cocoapups were very young babies when they were dumped on a country road near Prosser, in Eastern Washington, in early September. A rescuer took them in and called on HART for help. We were able to place them in a foster home, and they have been growing and thriving ever since.

It's difficult to guess the breed mix of dumped puppies, and when these little guys first came to us we assumed they were part Border Collie or Heeler. Then we fed them and they GREW, and now we're pretty sure that Mama was at least part Doberman, while they may have different fathers. We believe Reese's papa was a German Shepherd mix.

Reese is located in Kennewick, Eastern Washington. We post our dogs as located in other cities in order to optimize their chances of finding a great home. Please plan on a road trip to meet all the available puppies if your application to adopt is approved. They are so worth it!

SOCIALIZATION
Reese adores his foster mom, but is cautious around other people. Treats help win his approval, but he takes a long time to warm up, and he can be barky with strangers. His adopter will need to work with him to socialize him and build his confidence.

He shares his foster home with a large pack of dogs of all ages and sizes. He is gentle with the tinies and respectful of the older dogs, but loves playing with the younger, more energetic members of the pack.

There are ducks and chickens in his foster home. He doesn't have access to them, and doesn't show any interest in getting to them through the fence. He seems to have very little prey drive, and would probably live safely with a confident, dog-savvy cat.

TEMPERAMENT & BEHAVIOR
This boy is very laid back! He has plenty of puppy energy and will likely be a good companion for walks and casual hikes, but he's also able to settle and take life easy while his human is busy working.

He's an affectionate pup who loves attention. Reese will check in with you at intervals to collect a hug and a kiss, and then he ambles off and continues with his day. He's not at all needy, but he's a good companion who tends to follow his foster mom around while she goes about her day's work.

Reese loves a good chew, although he's pretty good at knowing the difference between his toys and yours. He may steal your socks - he likes carrying them around. He loves to wrestle with the other dogs, and enjoys a good game of tug or keepaway. He enjoys toys, and will chase a ball - although he hasn't yet learned to bring it back.

He's starting to act like a bit of a watchdog. He'll alert and let you know when there's a stranger nearby, and he'll bark to let you know to pay attention. When there's nothing in particular to bark at, he tends to be quiet.

TRAINING
Reese is reliably house-trained, and will let you know when he needs to go out. He is crate trained, although he doesn't love the crate except when he needs to hide. He's comfortable on a leash and enjoys going for leashed walks, and he comes when he's called. His house manners are generally good.

It's important to remember, REESE IS A PUPPY! Puppies are HARD WORK! He is still learning not to jump up on people. He likes to dig in the yard, and he loves to investigate the trash for treats or toys. In other words, he still has lessons to learn about being a civilized indoor dog. Please don't apply to adopt Reese unless you are up for the work of teaching him how to be a good boy.

PHYSICAL & HEALTH STATUS
Based on their teeth and the fact that they could barely lap water, we estimate that they were maybe six weeks old when we took them. We have assigned them July 23, 2023 as their birthday.

He is in good overall health, and has been vaccinated, treated for intestinal parasites, and microchipped. We expect him to weigh around 75 lbs when full-grown.

HART does not support pediatric spay and neuter. We believe, based on current research, that pups develop best when they have an uninterrupted supply of sex hormones for at least the first five months of their lives. The Cocoapups' adopters will be contractually obligated to ensure that their pup is sterilized between five months and one year. HART will refund $100 - equivalent to the cost of sterilization by our usual veterinary clinic - when you provide proof that your pup has been sterilized.

ADOPTION INFORMATION
Reese is living in a private home, and will be available to meet you after your adoption application has been approved. Please email HearthfireART@gmail.com to request an adoption application form.
