Meet Andy- UPDATE

VAS got a little hard a few weeks ago, two small pitties were brought in as strays. They were scared, shaking, defecating everywhere, TERRIFIED. They had small cuts and wounds on their faces, noses, and necks; nails very overgrown, ribs sticking out. Worst of all writhing on leash, fighting coming in to the building, so scared that when one person handed the leash to another it was instant fight or flight reaction. Then it was flinching the first time being fed because the bowl was held over their head, and biting at the kennel bars till they were bleeding because they didn’t know where they were. That kind of day….it’s a hard one.
So here we are, Orphan Annie and Andy, they have come around, slowly, steadily, with lots of patience. They have built trust with the staff and volunteers; have learned to walk on a leash. Have learned how to make new friends, and understand they have a warm bed and 2 warm meals a day.

Andy we think is around the 1 year old mark. He is definitely more needy and clingy than his sister. He has shown some separation anxiety here at the shelter, very vocal when left alone in our yards. He is more jumpy and exuberant out of the two. He has a harder time listening and calming down but we are working on those behaviors.

For adoption purposes….Andy would benefit from someone who has dealt with separation anxiety in the past. We need someone who has a good canine skill set, who knows body language and dog behavior. Who can help him learn it’s okay to be left alone. Someone who really is a MOM or DAD; he needs to be socialized and exposed to the world in a safe and proper manner. His world we suspect has been very small, and yes he comfy at VAS but it is his new security blanket. Even going to the vet was difficult and stressful for Andy. He needs someone who knows how to provide a large amount of calm reassurance. Andy needs to be shown the whole world out there and have a guide to take him on that journey. His new home will be without children- no exception, and no cats as well, other dogs we would be welcome too, if they are his size and it’s the proper fit. Andy will probably benefit from a resident dog to help him learn the ropes and to keep him calm when left alone. He has been taking cues from Annie and will likely do the same with a new brother or sister.

Our adoption fee is $332.64 (including tax) for all dogs/puppies. Our sweet senior dogs (7+ year olds) are $101.92 to adopt. ALL adoptions include the spay/neuter, first set of shots, microchip and a free vet check! Hours for adoption viewings are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am until 6 pm. Please be advised that most of our dogs are strays, so we typically do not have background history on them.
