Meet Outstanding Opal-Illinois, a 4 month old female Labradoodle puppy, who is an IDOG foster home in Kirkland, Illinois near Chicago.

*Please read ALL the information in Opal’s listing before applying to ensure you understand what she needs to be successful in her new home.

*Please complete our adoption application at http://www.idogrescue.com/adoption_application(copy/paste URL into your browser).

*If you completed an adoption application in the last 3 months & would like for your application to be considered for Opal, please email us at rescue@idogdoodlerescue.org.

*You must complete our adoption application fully. If you choose not to answer all of the questions in the application, your application will not be considered. We will review your application & email you if you made our short list of applicants for her. Please respond within 24 hours if you receive an email from us about making our short list.

*You can check the status of her adoption at www.doodles.petfinder.com or any of our social media pages. We will change her status to adopted when she is adopted.

*We base our adoption decisions on what is in the best interest of our dogs. Please note our adoption policies are in place for the safety and welfare of our dogs. We are all volunteers and have jobs, families, pets of our own to care for. We do the best that we can to get back to you in a timely manner. We believe in taking time to go through our thorough process to try to match the dog with the best fit for that dog.

*You must be approved to adopt her before we will schedule a meet and greet. We do not transport our dogs.

**AGE: 4 months old (born December 2023)

*WEIGHT: 30 pounds

*FENCE REQUIREMENT: A physical fence and a yard are required. She requires daily exercise & enjoys playing with other dogs. No shock collars or invisible fences will be considered, as we do not feel these would set her up for success.

*COAT TYPE: soft flat coat that will probably shed. She is still a young puppy so her coat could change, but right now she has a softer, flat coat that does shed. Adopter should be prepared to have her groomed regularly with an estimated cost of $100/groom.

*ENERGY LEVEL: Opal has very typical puppy energy! She will have spurts of excitement usually followed by a nap ? She plays like a typical puppy and will bite at everything when playing.

*DOGS: Opal has been doing good with her foster family's dogs. She wants to puppy play with them, but if they give her cues that they do not want to play, she will stand on her back feet in front of them and bounce around without touching them – like she’s trying to talk them into playing with her ? Due to the intense, playful nature of puppies, she would be best placed with dogs with a similar desire to interact and play.

*CATS: unknown.

*KIDS: 6+. Unknown, Opal has done well with the 6-year-old in her foster home. She will get excited when the child runs and yells; Opal will run with her and occasionally jumps and bites at her pony tail.

*CAR: Opal does great in the car. Her foster family has a hammock that covers the back seat. She will lay on it as close as she can get to the front passengers and lay down. She is quiet during the ride and will sit up and look around when the car stops.

*CRATE: Opal will run right into the crate when she is told “crate” as long as she gets a treat for going in! She will sit quietly for about a minute, then she will start to bark if you are still in the house. She will bark occasionally while you are gone, she just doesn’t love being by herself. At night she wanted no part of being in the crate. She yelled for several nights before her foster family started letting her stay out of the crate at night. She sleeps on a dog bed with her foster siblings.

*HOUSE TRAINED: Opal has almost mastered potty training! She will still have the occasional accident in the house, but she will ring the bells on the back door when she wants to go out. She still gets up usually once in the middle of the night to go potty and will usually wake us up to go out. (She is better at sleeping through the night if the water is taken away from her about an hour before bed.)

*LEASH: Opal walks great on the leash with a harness. If she is allowed to do whatever, she will run around like a typical puppy and cross in front of you etc. We have been working on leash training with her and she has gotten a lot better!

Outstanding Opal was surrendered to IDOG from a breeder who was having a hard time placing dogs.

Here is what Opal’s foster family has to say about her:

Opal is a super sweet, energetic puppy! She wants to play until naptime and nap until playtime! She likes to be near people and will follow you around the house if she can. She can be a little bit stubborn; she will need a family that is willing to work with her on training and learning her boundaries. She is getting tall very quickly and with her new height, she wants to explore all the things she couldn’t get to before. She has started jumping on the table to see what is for dinner, but once she is corrected, she will usually go lay down until we are done eating.

Opal is all puppy and will still jump and play bite; she does all the normal puppy things and will need all the normal puppy training!

Opal likes to be outside and will run and play in the yard with the other dogs, or by herself. She will find sticks and pinecones if she can and likes to chew on them. We do not allow her to chew on them though and she does not protest at all when they are taken away from her.

She loves belly rubs the most and will roll right onto her back whenever someone comes near her! She does like to snuggle and if allowed she will curl up in your lap or next to you. If she is not in your lap, she will lay directly in front of you on the floor, so she knows if you get up!

Opal will start the night out on the dog bed, she will usually climb up in bed at some point in the night. She wanted no part of being alone in her crate at night, so we started letting her sleep out of the crate…. She spent the first 9 weeks of her life curled up with her brother, so we think she just doesn’t like being alone. Her new family will need to be prepared to help her navigate whatever their plans for the nighttime will be.

Due to the intense needs of puppies, we are looking for adopters who understand the training, exercise & socialization needs of puppies.

She is up to date on all age-appropriate vaccines (DHPP, Rabies, Bordetella), is microchipped, fecal negative and current on heartworm/flea/tick preventives. She is too young to be spayed so IDOG will hold a $200 spay deposit. The adopter will be required under contract to spay her by 9 months of age. You will need to send the vet receipt to IDOG and we will then refund the deposit. If you fail to get her spayed by 9 months of age per the adoption contract terms, you will be required to return her back to IDOG Rescue.

ADOPTION FEE: $400 adoption fee + $200 refundable spay deposit to be refunded upon proof of spaying by 9 months of age

ADOPTION FEE EXPLANATION:
Puppies and highly adoptable dogs have a higher adoption fee to help IDOG cover the vetting and expenses of the other dogs in IDOG whose adoption fees do not cover their expenses. Our expenses are high these days due to increased vetting expenses, board and train costs, medical/health issues and surgery that is needed for some of our dogs. IDOG relies heavily on donations to bridge the gap between our adoption fees and our expenses. Unfortunately donations are down across the board for all rescues.
