Meet Mayo

Mayo stands tall among other dogs here at the shelter. All heads turn when he strolls confidently into the kennel. He spends his time sniffing and exploring the play yard. He prefers the company of his humans more than other dogs, though he tolerates puppies like the cool uncle! Mayo would appreciate a calmer home with lots of walks or room to roam. He's an independent boy who is looking for a human to love him as much as he will love them! The entire staff loves Mayo and he's our go-to guy for adventures b/c he's so chill and easy-going.

From his foster buddy:

First off, we stopped at Home Depot . Mayo waited patiently in line for our turn to return some merchandise.

Back in the car and as always, he settled down on his mat waiting to reach the next destination. He seems to love rides. We spent time roaming down some streets in Durango before reaching Park Elementary where the annual party was taking place. I wasn't sure Mayo would keep his cool amongst so many people and children chasing each other, playing soccer, having fun, celebrating the start of the summer, etc.
Was I wrong! Mayo settled down and lounged comfortably while one admirer after another, stopped by to greet him. At one point, there must have been 6 kids, sitting by him, asking about his story. He definitely loved the attention and kept his cool. And adults followed.

This is another success story for Mayo, going with the flow, ready to be petted, unfazed by either the noise or the chaos around him. Where does he get that wonderful and mature demeanor, I cannot say but as always we bonded with the crowds and Mayo did not disappoint! Although there were 3 other pups from Humane at this event, Mayo stayed focused on humans, male, female, kids with no hint of any bias or aloofness.
The event lasted one hour and 1/2. Whenever I started a conversation with some folks, Mayo decided to lay down and wait it out. Such patience!

And I swear Mayo is getting more and more affectionate and gentle...He will be such a great family member when he finds his new home.

We had another successful adventure with Mayo on Saturday. He was going to model
at the fun and interesting Durango Art Center drawing class for a couple of hours.

Mayo wanted some fresh air first and we went up and down Main. Lots to see, and many dogs roaming around, not a dull moment for Mayo. Confident and obedient, he stayed by my side, curious but always well-mannered and super cool.

Once at the Art class, we took our position. Mayo was the perfect model. He was patient and worked with the audience for a couple of hours. There was another pup at the same session. Mayo engaged with Liam (a pretty active 5-month-old) but let him do his thing. It was actually very funny to see such opposite behaviors, with Liam, goofing off next to regal Mayo.

Mayo got lots of praise for his perfect conduct and enjoyed the attention and compliments. He even raised some good money for the Humane Society.

Another great day with Mayo. Ready as usual for some attention, he got it.

This pup is so amazingly low key. He demonstrated once again his good nature throughout the whole day. No anxiety, no fear, no weird behavior! Mayo was as relaxed as could be...and quiet.

And that was despite the noise we experienced at home while 2 young guys were going back and forth in the house working on a project for a couple of hours. First off, Mayo greeted the 2 workers, happy to be petted and complimented. When the drilling and the banging started, he kept his calm. He was never phased by the noise, he never budged. He just checked on the work now and then. Remarkable trust in humans!

Mayo loves food. I did have to watch what I left on the kitchen counter at all times. He did not beg at the table while we ate though. He otherwise gave me his paw, sitted, when he accepted a treat gently. And he thanks Humane for the lovely peanut butter kong!

I was however perplexed when Mayo did not follow me up to the 2nd floor or down to the basement. I take it the enclosed staircase felt creepy.

He was well-mannered in the house. He waited, sitting for his food. He used his dog bed and blanket for his quiet time and relaxation. He enjoyed his two walks and did his business then. He took a couple of naps, one on my lap. He was very affectionate. and engaging.

Back and forth to the shelter, Chill Mayo enjoyed the car ride, laying down.
