Meet Lucy

Meet Lucy! Lucy is a 4 year old Mini American Eskimo Dog. She is currently overweight, but her ideal weight should be around 20 lbs. Lucy lost her parents, their passing was very hard on Lucy. Lucy is a bit "gun-shy" now when her current foster family leaves the home for appts, errands, work, etc. For these reasons, we are looking for a forever home where someone is at home, works from home, newly retired, or can take their dog to work regularly. Lucy would not do well with a full-time working family where she would be left alone for several hours each day. Lucy was an only dog in her previous home, but she is now living with other dogs in her foster home. She is learning to coexist peacefully, sharing the space and foster family, but she does not tolerate another dog getting in her personal space OR another dog trying to get attention from a family member at the same time she is. Lucy will show teeth and growl at another dog getting too close, and if the other dog is insistent, she will lunge and snap at that dog. This aggression is only directed towards the dog, not towards her people. For this reason, we are recommending Lucy to be an only dog. The one dog that Lucy does get along with fairly well, is our rescue, Fitz, a senior boy, Standard Eskie, that is very independent and not demanding for attention and affection. Lucy is playful and loves her toys. She also loves to take walks and take rides in the car. Many people ask this about our dogs, she does not get car sick! Lucy's wishes are to be a constant companion; she seems to like men and women equally. Lucy is still a young adult Eskie, she does need daily exercise, more than a walk a day. Lucy would do well in a single family home, condo or townhome, but not with a shared yard space with other dog owners. She is not a dog that wishes for visits to the local dog park. As for other pets in the home, we are still testing with cats, so the verdict is not out yet. We have also tested with a couple of domestic birds, loud barking and jumping up on her back legs were her reactions. Now for kids, generally speaking, Lucy loves all people, but she has had some negative experiences with younger kids in her past, for this reason, we are recommending families with kids, must be over 12 years old. Lucy is very affectionate and loves to cuddle at the end of a busy day!

Lucy is a good eater, she enjoys mealtime and is treat motivated. She eats kibble with water as her main meal, sprinkled with a little Fresh Pet Vital Grain-free as a topper. She is on a restricted amount of food to help with her weight loss plan. Lucy is housebroken, but she currently needs to be on a schedule, she is not asking to go outside on her own yet. Lucy loves taking walks and we are encouraging her to run by playing in the fenced yard available to her with her foster family. Overweight dogs are more susceptible to leg/knee issues, hip and back issues in the future, so it is important for Lucy's long term good health to be at or close to her ideal weight. For now, with the exception of her weight, Lucy's health check-up went very well, she is spayed and fully vaccinated, as well as Heartworm and fecal negative. Lucy is microchipped to our rescue. Of course, all adopters receive copies of the vet care paperwork of the dog they are adopting. All of our dogs are adopted with a well fitting collar and leash set.
