Bred to hunt boar (wild hogs) Catahoula are fearless, independent quick thinkers, they are strong (physically and willed) protective and loyal one person dogs. They do not make the best choice for a Family dog. These dogs require early socializing, firm but fair training and a job. They make excellent Ranch help, "in the woods" buddies and running companions. This is not a breed for inexperienced dog handlers and requires a solid fenced yard or large acreage.
Their courage and independence often renders them "stubborn", so they need a fairly patient and determined owner too! But once you e had a relationship with a Catahoula you may be ruined for all others dogs. They are fiercely loyal, protective and your absolute best friend. Old Yeller, from the childhood story and movie, was a Catahoula. They come in a variety of colors and range in size from 50-90#s.
