Meet Jenny

Jenny is about 3 years and 7 months old, a Korean Jindo, Shiba Inu and Formosan Mountain Dog Mix from the country of Taiwan. She currently weighs 49.56 pounds (as of 2/4/2024) and is fully grown.

Jenny’s rescued story:

Jenny had a very rough start; she was raised by her owner to produce dog meat since she was a puppy. Before she was rescued, she gave birth to two litters of about 9-10 puppies, all of them were killed and eaten by her owners. When she was discovered by the rescuer in April 2022, she had already given birth to her third litter of five puppies but only two were left. According to neighbors, some of the three missing puppies were eaten, and some ran onto the road and were hit by cars because the house is right next to a busy road.

Jenny and all her puppies never lived in the house or had a normal meal, they were kept outside eating sour and smelly kitchen scrapes. Their owner did not feed them every day, so they were constantly hungry. But Jenny was a great mom, although she never had enough food to eat, she still made sure that her puppies were well fed.

Eating dog or cat meat is illegal in Taiwan. Jenny’s owner is a foreign worker working in southern Taiwan, hired by a construction company. He came from a country where cat and dog meat are legally used as food.

There are many foreign workers in Taiwan from the same country as Jenny’s owner; they often steal family dogs or snatch stray cats or dogs off the street and kill them for food. Although the Taiwanese government had already informed them of the law not to eat cats and dogs when they entered Taiwan, they still often do that secretly.

Because of Jenny’s special breed in Taiwan, we believed that she was a family pet when she was a puppy, but might be stolen from outside of her home or might be lost or abandoned and turned into a stray, and then was captured and raised by this foreign worker.

At first, Jenny’s owner argued that he did not know the law against eating dog meat in Taiwan and was unwilling to let the rescuer take dogs away. Finally, he agreed to give up Jenny and her two puppies after the rescuer told him that he would be reported for illegally killing and eating dog meat.

Jenny's Completed medical information:

After Jenny and her two puppies were rescued, they were immediately taken to the hospital for a complete physical check-up. Jenny’s two children were healthy and were adopted to California months later. But Jenny was very thin, malnourished, had some skin diseases and eye infections, and was found to have a very mild heartworm infection. The vet said Jenny was very lucky to be rescued in time.

After months of treatments, Jenny has gained some weight, her infected skin, eyes and heartworm were completely cured; she is healthy now.

Jenny has passed the following medical tests: distemper, 4 Idexx (Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma Phagocytophilum), CBC, Biochemistry blood work, and PCR tests for diseases and infections transmitted by fleas or ticks. She had x-rays on her hips, and she does not have hip dysplasia. She also had teeth cleaned on 1/26/2024.

Jenny is spayed, de-wormed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccinations including rabies shots. She is heartworm negative and has been on monthly preventative treatment. All Jenny's medical documents including the x-rays films on hips will be given to her adopter when she is adopted.

Jenny's temperaments and personality:

Since being rescued, Jenny has been living with a foster family for one and a half years to recuperate and learn the rules of living in the house with people.

The family has three cats and many foster dogs, Jenny gets along well with all of them, but she seems to like cats more. One of Jenny’s good friends is a brindle cat named “Mimi”, they often take a nap and rest together.

Jenny is a mellow and more people-oriented dog who prefers to be with people when people are around. The foster mom speaks highly of Jenny. She said Jenny is not passionate to strangers but very friendly. Whenever people come to visit, Jenny is always the first among a group of dogs to be noticed by the guests because of her unique fur pattern and good manners.

Almost every Wednesday, foster mom takes Jenny with her when she went to the traditional market to buy food or go shopping in stores that allow dogs in. Although Jenny was a little nervous at first because she was in a new environment and seeing many people, she was calm and would not pull the leash. Now she often goes food shopping with foster mom and greets strangers happily when she sees them.

Jenny is not food aggression or possession, but she does not like dogs around her when she is eating. She eats very slowly, and when other dogs have finished eating, she usually has not finished yet. If the dog gets too close to her at this time or tries to grab her food, she will be unhappy and will bare her teeth in warning. But she is completely fine with people around when she is eating; people can pet her or take food out of her mouth without upsetting her.

The foster parents have two teenaged boy and girl, Jenny gets along with them. Jenny met some 10–12-year-old children when she went for a walk, and they all liked to pet her; Jenny always behaved calmly and affectionately. Jenny has not met very young kids so far, so we do not know if she can get along with them. We think a moderately active family with older children will be better for Jenny.

Jenny is very loving to her caretakers. Foster mom said that Jenny is a good companion for afternoon tea. Every time Jenny sees foster mom put a cup of coffee and cake on the table, she will immediately sit on the chair and wait for foster mom to sit down to enjoy her afternoon teatime.

Jenny likes bread, burgers, and all flour-based foods, so foster mom often gives Jenny a small piece of bread during afternoon tea. She joked that Jenny would be very happy living in a western country.

Jenny is house broken; she would rather hold for 14 hours without using bathroom than has an accident inside the house. She does not have separation anxiety and is not scared of thunderstorms or fireworks either. She walks on leash nicely, loves car rides and is well-behaved in the car.

Jenny likes to go out and meet different people or run on the beach. Jenny’s foster home is close to a beach. Almost every weekend, foster parents take Jenny and several other foster dogs to play at the beach. Foster mom said Jenny does not play with other dogs much, and she usually explores on the beach by herself. Once she found a dead fish, but she did not want the foster mom to see it, she covered the fish with her paws.

We hope Jenny’s new family can include her in your outings, short trips, or vacations besides daily walks in the neighborhood or playing in the back yard. We really want Jenny to have a chance to experience different parts of her life that she had missed before.
