Ivy is looking for a special family. Not just any family- a VERY special family that will understand she’s had a difficult and scary life. Ivy was rescued from a puppy mill. She arrived at NGPR very unfamiliar with human interaction and scared of almost everything. Despite her fears, she is a very sweet girl. She is making progress but has a long way to go. Ivy prefers to be indoors, where she knows she is safe. Once she is comfortable, she'll lay with her humans for short periods of time, but her new family will need to be very patient and give her lots of time to adjust. As a result of Ivy’s fears, house training had taken awhile but she is now doing well. Her new family will need to help her understand that she is safe going to the bathroom outside. Ivy seems more comfortable going outside at night than during the day as she is fearful of daylight. She is good on a leash but is too nervous to go out for walks in the neighborhood or to meet people. Ivy doesn’t have any basic obedience training. Due to her anxiety, bad behavior hasn’t really been an issue as she doesn’t venture anywhere she could get in trouble. Ivy’s perfect home is a quiet home, perhaps out in the country, as loud neighborhood noises make her very scared. Ivy would benefit from another confident dog to help her feel more secure and show her the world is not so scary. She's looking for a family that doesn’t need immediate love and affection from their dog, but Ivy will thank you for your endless patience in different ways. Watching her very slowly come out of her shell will be the best reward for her new people who have experience working with traumatized dogs. We understand that a dog like Ivy is not for everyone, this special girl requires a special place to live. We know the perfect family is out there for her. If you have a quiet home filled with patient, understanding and loving humans--well then maybe it’s the pyrfect retreat for sweet Ivy.

Our goal is to assess every application on its own merits. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature (www.nationalpyr.org/know-the-breed) and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues. For puppies under six months old, the applicant’s ability to socialize the puppy with older dogs is a priority.
