Helen Mixed Breed Bradenton, FL

Helen is a 1 year old female mixed breed. She weighs 47 pounds. Helen is completely deaf and also has some visual impairment. She will need a special adopter that can provide specialized training. Helen was originally transferred from a county shelter so we do not have information about her previous household. Helen has been on several slumber parties. From these, we have received mixed feedback about Helen's interactions with dogs and cats. Generally we believe that Helen is essentially not appropriate with dogs because of her physical restrictions. Being deaf and visually impaired, she would not have learned typical dog communication as a puppy. During a key social development period, she would have missed out on auditory communication cues and likely some visual communication cues that guide appropriate dog interactions. We believe that it might be possible for Helen to live with another dog if that dog was extremely dog social and tolerant. We would require at least one meet and greet with any resident dogs and our staff would help determine whether we think it would be an appropriate fit. Regarding cats, one slumber party client reported that Helen chased the cats in the home. Because of her inability to hear and see visual cues from cats, this has the potential to turn into inappropriate play. From her slumber parties and a previous adoption, we believe that Helen would do best in a home without children. We also have information that Helen may have some resource guarding with food.
