MEET GEMMA!

Gemma is approximately 2 years old and about 50 lbs. She has gold eyes and a beautiful red, brown, and cream coat that is exceptionally soft and fluffy for its medium length.

She is a happy easy-going dog. Gemma is good-natured, eager to please, and enjoys learning new tricks for treats. She knows how to sit and is currently learning how to “leave it”, “come”, “stay”, “lay down”, “turn around”, and how to walk on a loose leash. She is very responsive to the tone of your voice and will happily come when called by name.

Gemma loves to play gently with stuffed toys, people, and other playful dogs (compatibility with cats is unknown). She loves to go for walks and go hiking and jogging, but she also spends time napping and being lazy throughout the day. One of her favorite rainy day activities is to lay at the front door and watch the neighbors walk by through the screen door.

She is a quiet dog. Gemma doesn’t bark very often and she’s not very talkative. She also tolerates nail trims and baths well with some care, affection, and lots of treats. She is house trained and is comfortable sleeping in a crate at night.
We believe Gemma may have been abused in the past due to an early tendency to shy away and cower if she thought she might have “done something wrong”. That reaction has resolved itself with time, but Gemma’s new family should be familiar with positive reinforcement training techniques - aggression or dominance training techniques are absolutely not recommended for this sweet and gentle dog.

If Gemma is left outdoors for extended periods of time and is exceptionally bored, she does tend to dig in the yard but that has been easily resolved by ensuring she gets adequate exercise and mental stimulation and by limiting any unsupervised time spent outdoors to 10-15 minutes. Because Gemma is so athletic, her new owners should have a home with a fenced in yard at least 6 feet tall. Although Gemma has never tried to escape, she can jump really high when a bird or squirrel has her attention.

Gemma would pair great with an active person or family who are familiar with the husky breed and who can provide ample exercise. She would also be a great buddy for a dog of her energy. She is an indoor dog and loves to lounge on the couch and snuggle as well as run around outside. You cannot find a better husky than Gemma.

Gemma has been out on a trial run which means a possible adopter has taken her for a week to try her out. Here is what we have learned. Gemma needs true time to decompress. So she needs to be in house for 2 to 3 weeks before even taking her out into public or on walks where there will be a lot of people around. This girl truly needs training. She needs to know she will never be dumped again. She is scared and she needs people who can help her work through it and keep her and not give up on her.

Gemma is currently being fostered in Rochester. If you are interested in meeting Gemma, you will need to travel to the Foster's location in Rochester.

Gemma's adoption fee is $250.
