Meet DARLING LITTLE DANI

We’re really not sure about Dani’s breed. We picked Cur because of the distinct tail and other small characteristics. She has a slight build.

Here’s her story and more about her personality.

Dani is a very sweet dog who’s been through a lot, and over the course of the last year has started to blossom. She came to our rescue along with her siblings at about six months old. This group of dogs had never interacted with people, and they were all very afraid, very cautious. Think about that. Dani had never been held, petted, scratched behind the ears, tossed a treat, never slept in a bed, had no idea what dog toys were. She’d never been inside a house! Born outside, the litter stayed outside, only the mama dog was aloud inside the owner’s house periodically. He’d dump food on the ground every few days and the rest of the time- Dani’s litter scrounged around the best they could. Picture them huddled together on the porch- hoping for help from inside, or using the space under the porch when the Oklahoma rain poured down.

Some of our fem volunteers have been working with all of them, and over time have gained trust. Dani is the smallest of the group but acts as a little leader to some. She’s gentle, curious, will quietly follow you closely behind and then run away if you make a sudden move in a direction she wasn’t anticipating or turn around to look at her! But, she’s quick to come back and start all over again as you go about your chores and every once in awhile she’ll give you a soft tap with her nose on the back of your calf. We think she’s saying, “Remember me, I’m right here!”

Don’t get me wrong, Dani can unexpectedly bark! bark! bark! at you. Something we might not be able to understand why that just happened—— but SHE knows why! It’s over with quickly and we all move on. She’s never snapped at anyone, and she’s more than likely being the protective leader (bossy pants) and is looking out for her BFF, Dinky. (He’s one of her siblings)

It’s too bad, but rescuing hundreds of dogs is year means we don’t get to actually get to LIVE with them. Our interactions are three times a day for two hours as we are spending time cleaning, feeding, etc along with the 15 other dogs we might have at this location. But our it’s our experience that informs our opinion that Dani is smart, teachable, loving, fun & funny, and will be a special addition to the right family. Once she trusts that her people are kind, and she understands the routines of the household, she’ll be able to be all the things she’s meant to be.

It’s going to take a special person or family in order for Dani to thrive. A home with regular, consistent routines (most homes have that) and very little, if ever, loud activity going on all the time would be best for her. She needs someone with calm patience to show her what living as part of a human pack is like. She’s a star within her dog pack; maybe she can be a star within your pack!
