Meet Chewie

Meet Chewbacca who also goes by Chewie! This 1.5-year-old goofy brindle Boxer is one of a kind as he was born with two congenital abnormalities; a cleft palate that gives him a one-of-a-kind look and no ear canals. Neither of these have slowed down this big, high-energy pup and he’s been working with a trainer on best ways to communicate. He has a basic understanding of his commands and is almost house-trained, although he is a big couch-surfer so setting boundaries and designating a play area will be key for him. This high-energy boy is weighing in at nearly 90 pounds and has good leash manners when going on walks.

True to his name, Chewie loves to chew bones, toys and treats, but his absolute FAVORITE is playing with other dogs. He loves being able to burn off his energy playing with the dozens of friends that he has made during training at Big Hair Pet Care in Sturbridge, MA. Since he is a big (and clumsy) boy, he would do best in a home without small animals or children as he does like to greet his dog-friends with a paw to the face. Chewie also loves to tell you how excited he is by yodeling loudly, albeit off-tune, so would not do well in an apartment setting.

Chewie’s ideal adoptive family will have the perfect blend of calm patience and fun athleticism to help him adjust to a new environment and still be able to be his playful self. Since he is deaf, our professional trainer has been working with an E-collar, not in terms of negative reinforcement or punishment, but being able to communicate with him using low-level frequencies. Since he is a powerful and strong special needs dog we would be happy for someone to foster him before committing to adoption to make sure he is the best fit for your family. Also, because Chewie has grown tremendously with his training at Big Hair Pet Care we are also including 4 free in-home training sessions to make sure he is setup to be the best pup that he can be!

Chewbacca is still currently being boarded in Massachusetts and is eagerly waiting to find his forever home. Chewbacca's adoption fee has been graciously sponsored by one of our volunteers so the adoption fee will be waived for the adoptive family. To adopt this pet, please visit https://www.louieslegacy.org/adopt

All of our dogs come spayed or neutered, fully up to date on vaccinations, including rabies (if age appropriate) and Bordetella, are microchipped, heartworm negative, current on flea/tick and heartworm prevention, dewormed, and treated for any ailments found upon veterinary examination. The adoption fee covers a portion of these services, and makes it possible for us to continue rescuing animals.

For more information on the adoption fees and the adoption process, please complete our adoption application here: https://www.louieslegacy.org/adopt - an application allows us to get to know your family better so we can assess whether the animal you are interested in is a good match for your home. An application does not obligate you to adopt. Please understand that due to the volume of applications some animals receive, we are unable to contact all applicants. If your application is considered a good fit for the dog you are interested in, or even a different pet, a volunteer will give you a call as soon as possible.
