Meet Captain

Meet Captain

Captain is a COURTESY POST. Captain still lives on the farm from where he is scheduled to be retired from. Captain will remain on the farm until a suitable adopter is approved. NALA Rescue will be forwarding any and all applications, inquiries, and other forms of communication directly to the owner of Captain.

Captain is a neutered 6-year-old Pyrenees/Anatolian mix. He was bred as an livestock guardian dog (lgd) and has been an active working dog his whole life. He has been successfully guarding goats, chickens, rabbits and horses and has lived exclusivelyin a barn and pasture with his livestock.
Our farm is downsizing and Captain is ready for retirement - he’s earned it!

Our family truly adores Captain and believe he would make the transition to pet life with the right family pretty easily!

He does not have experience living inside of a home. He is NOT housebroken. He is NOT kennel trained. However he only potties outside of the barn where he lives, so I believe he would quickly and easily learn how to potty train. He is also used to schedule routines - when he is let out and when he comes in for the night, etc. he is smart and eager to please. I think he would be easy to transition to an indoor living situation (although I can’t guarantee how he’ll do)

He is generally an easy going, mellow personality. He loves people and is great with kids! He will alert bark when a stranger comes onto the property (his job) but trusts us when we vouch for a stranger and we’ve never had to worry about aggression toward people or kids.

He is tolerant and accepting of our house dogs (big and small) when they wander down to the barn to hang out with him. However he is consistently aggressive towards cats, raccoon, opossums, etc. HE WILL KILL CATS and other livestock predators! This is the only reason we can’t retire Captain in our home. He has to be in a cat free home.

Captain has never shown food aggression or resource guarding behaviors. He has a mediocre recall and will walk on a leash ok but doesn’t have great leash manners. Again, I think with some intentional training he would do really well - he has just never had to learn these skills.

Captain can climb and jump fences, and will bolt and run away - he has always come back, but only when he is ready.
On the farm, we have found that a physical fence in combination with an invisible fence line works great to keep him where he supposed to be. He will blow right through an invisible fence on its own and can climb/jump just about anything else. So, a new home really needs to consider their fencing capabilities before bringing Captain on board.

He rides in a car well, and receives regular veterinary care including dental cleanings (he shows no aggression at the vets). He is healthy and current on vaccines and heart worm testing. He comes microchipped.

He is responsive to gentle correction and is a sweet, fun, lovey personality. We really love him!

Captain is not under the care of NALA Rescue. NALA Rescue will not be processing applications, emails, inquiries, voicemails, or the likes. Any form of contact made to NALA Rescue will be forwarded to the current owner of Captain. NALA Rescue is not to be held responsible, liable, or accountable for Captain.
