Meet Canelo

Meet Canelo ("cinnamon" in Spanish)! He is a sterilized male dog from Tulum, Mexico who is looking for his forever home. Canelo is a young pup at one and a half years. He was rescued from the streets of Tulum, Mexico when he was just a few months old. He was in terrible condition, but after getting medical care, rest and some good nourishment, he thrived and has grown into a beautiful dog. Canelo is super friendly, very loving, obedient, intelligent and calm and laid back in temperament. He gets along with other dogs but needs to be introduced slowly. He has not been around young children in his foster home. Canelo has a prey instinct (i.e., squirrel chaser). He tolerates cats under supervision but probably should go to home without cats. Canelo is easy to walk on a leash and he can also be off leash in safe locations while under appropriate supervision. Canelo is house trained at his foster home.

Canelo is friends with Blackie (see separate listing). We would be thrilled if they could be adopted together although it isn't mandatory and the most important thing is to get each of them a loving, forever home. (And who knows, if the adopters live near each other perhaps play dates could be arranged?!)

Currently, Canelo is located in Tulum, Mexico. When we have an approved adoption application for our adoptable dogs in Mexico, we arrange transport (on a commercial airplane) from Mexico to upstate New York. That process can take up to eight weeks (sometimes longer in the summer when there are flight restrictions based on the temperature outside) so we require patient adopters!

All of our dogs arrive sterilized, healthy, heartworm negative, current on all vaccinations and already on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Our adoption fee of $400 per dog covers our vet and transport fees as well as your first month of heartworm and flea and tick meds -- and it is actually less than half of our total cost. (If Blackie and Canelo are adopted together, we will discount the second adoption fee to $100.)

Approved adopters must pay an initial $100 deposit. Once the dog has arrived in the U.S. you will have an opportunity to meet him/her before making a final decision. We do not want anyone to feel pressured into taking a dog that they do not think is right for them. If you don't think it will work after meeting the dog in person, we will refund your deposit. Once the adoption is completed, the remainder of the adoption fee ($300) is due. After the adoption, if the dog does not work out for any reason, it must come back to us (this is part of adoption contract). If the dog is returned in the first 30 days, $250 will be refunded; after 30 days, the entire adoption fee is nonrefundable (but we still want the dog back if you do not want to keep him or her so we can find it a new home).

Our application process involved a pre-adoption home visit as well as a few follow up visits post-adoption so we generally will only accept applications from individuals who reside in upstate New York (within 1.5 hours of the Lake Placid area) or northern Vermont (Burlington area up through St. Albans). If you think an exception is warranted, let us know why. We don't require a fenced yard as a hard rule, but the lack of a fenced yard will certainly result in us taking a closer look at things. However, we do have a few hard rules: we will not adopt to anyone under the age of 21, anyone who is still in college, and anyone who does not own their home unless we can personally speak to the owner of the home or apartment and you have lived at that location for five years or longer. No exceptions on these.

If you are interested in finding out more about Canelo and our adoption process, please send us an inquiry and be sure to tell us a little about yourself and why you are thinking about adopting a dog. Thank you for considering one of our adoptable dogs. Street dogs make the best pets!
