Meet Butter

Born January 11., 2024 Butter joined Mattie's Place along with her sister and her Mom, Buttercup (photo in the profile)

Buttercup (photo in the profile) is a small husky/shepherd mix, about 45 pounds, and just the sweetest dog. We have no idea who Butter's dad is.

Butter has been doing so well in her foster home and like her Mom, is the sweetest dog, with a hint of feisty.

At her vaccine appointment on March 25th, 2024 she weighed in at 9.50KG (20.9 pounds). She is perfectly healthy and doing well. I'm unsure of her final adult weight, but presumably she'll be smaller"ish" like her Mom ... maybe 60 pounds. But I have absolutely no guarantee of her final weight range.

She will have her spay appointment, at the cost of Mattie's Place, on June 5, 2024 in Stouffville, so her adopter must be able to attend to drop her off for 8:00 am and pick her back up at 3:00 pm for discharge. I will be there to help navigate.

Butter will adapt into most living situations. She's still young, so would do best with having someone WFH or home most often to work on training and molding her into an awesome adult canine. Another dog in the home, that is well mannered would be a great mentor for her.

Someone willing to work with a professional trainer would be an added bonus as professional training is such a gift to puppies and all dogs.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Isn’t she lovely! Butter has gone from stride to stride in the few short months we have spent together. She is as loving as she is gorgeous and as playful as she is sassy. Butter is a very intelligent dog and has learned tricks like how to wait for food, treats and being let out the door and won’t move without the command (okay). She will ask for permission before going onto the couch/ bed, she will let you know when she needs to go potty by sitting next to you and gesturing towards the door. She will use body language to let you know what she needs and when she needs it mainly “pointing” with her head.

Butter is not much of a barking type but will vocalise by whining only when she is hungry and/ or really needs to go outside, or of course would like a cuddle. She is good with strangers and new dogs and has been desensitised to city life including streetcars and busses and will happily walk along busy sidewalks too!

She can be slightly timid if a much larger dog approaches her rapidly and will then run in between my legs if she feels unsure about a situation, this is easily resolved by letting her know you are then and giving her a stroke or three. She is getting the hang of not pulling on the lead and with patience and repetition she is sure to understand commands. I have taught her “left” and “right” whistles (and understands the words too if you cannot whistle) when changing directions along with a recall whistle but will respond just as well “butter come!”.

Butter is currently in the routine of waking up at 8:30 will breakfast at 9:00, she will then have a nap roughly between 10:30-11 until 1pm and be up and ready to play/ go outside for a few hours before sleeping between 4-6, her dinner time. Butter will go to bed every night around 10pm and she will take herself to bed if she is really tired before that. She sleeps through the night even with people still walking around/ talking near her crate.

She currently has not spent much time around cats and small children as she has the tendency to get very excited and will just want to play but with her size and strength she needs some attention in these areas however she will sit and wait for permission to greet. She does not jump up when visitors arrive given that they also have a calm demeanour.

Butter shows no signs of separation anxiety and will give you a cuddle after being let out of her crate. She stays in her crate whilst I am at work or otherwise occupied but can be trusted for short periods of time to play on her own/ nap nearby. She is currently teething so keep this in mind if you notice any mouthing but this will pass as she gets older. She has a good grasp on the concept of no biting now and will find a toy instead of hands once told so.

Overall Butter is simply of one the happiest dogs I have come across and It has been such an honour to watch her grow. She will provide her human a loving and loyal companion and provide you with some of the goofiest moments daily.

I’m simply in love with her and I’m sure you will be too.
