Meet Bella

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs in need. Thank you!

Pretty little Bella is believed to be a Lab/Corgi mix who weighs in at 26 lbs and is a perfect age at 6-7 years. She is a happy, affectionate dog who was adopted in July 2021 but is being returned to SGRR through no fault of her own--she simply was not the right match for her adopter.

Bella is a wonderful companion, following her person and loving all the attention she can soak up. Her surrendering adopter told us Bella loves being outside and especially loves the snow, burying her head and rolling around in it. She does a happy dance anticipating a walk when her leash comes out, and she loves going on car rides. This social little girl goes on errands and likes to visit the pet store, local Tractor Supply, and the neighbors. She can be selective about her dog friends but has become much better at meeting new dogs and hanging out with them since she has had some training and relaxed in her home. We expect she may show some toy or food possessiveness in a new home, as she goes through another change in her life, but she has shown how good she can be once she feels secure. For example, a dog at the local library she once barked at is now her buddy. Bella just needed a little patience.

Bella has nice house manners and lets you know when she wants to go out. She loves to sleep on the couch or her dog bed, enjoys belly rubs, and is a good eater. She does not require any medications and has a good energy level, always ready for an outdoor adventure or car trip. Bella will be so happy in a home where she feels loved for who she is.

Background: SGRR received a call about a small, pretty stray, at the City of Mobile shelter, whose owners no longer wanted her. Previously adopted from the Mobile County shelter in 2017 at age 2-3, Bella was picked up as a stray shortly after and that time, reclaimed by her family. But this time they did not want her back and we promised Bella a home where she will be safe and loved. We do not know how or why she became a stray, and so special attention to flight risk should be paid to Bella, and all rescue dogs, to keep them safe.

Bella is vaccinated, spayed and micro-chipped. She tested negative for heartworm and requires no medications. This very good little girl so deserves a family to make her feel special!

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun.

If you would like to be part of Bella's rescue story, and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact the Adoption Committee at: CandyVS2@aol.com to be considered to adopt sweet little Bella.

Black Dog Syndrome
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by an adoption website, member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on the website.

You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these dogs and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

ABOUT OUR RESCUE
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters will be required to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may indicate that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are frequently getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and complete the application process so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on the observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters, and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will behave and adapt in your home.

A contract is signed on the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring their SGRR dog to a vet within 7 business days. All dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. However, if an adopter's vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog may be returned and a full refund would be provided.

Most of our dogs are fostered in private homes. We do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! To this end, the rescue retains an interest in each dog and our dogs can never be surrendered, re-homed, or sold. Should an adopter no longer be able to keep their SGRR dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer providing proper care. Adopters agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical care and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
