Meet Apollo
When Apollo got off transport he was terrified of stairs & had to be carried up and down them. Now, he will go up and down stairs, as long as there are minimal steps. He still refuses to go down our stairs into our basement.
This dog has made leaps & bounds since arriving to the 801 in November. When he first got off transport, he refused to come inside the house at all. He still had his feral mentality & was learning to trust people again. Now, Apollo is the ideal house guest. Overall, he has mellow energy with spurts of playfulness. He can free roam without any accidents & is trustworthy when left alone in the home. He takes treats gently, gives the softest most tender kisses & adores playing with his 2 foster dog siblings. True to his breed, he is handsy when playing with dogs & does bark at anything outside (birds, dogs, squirrels, passerby's). He prefers to eat outside alone. Apollo is truly a sensitive, gentle giant. He is a perfect gentleman on the leash & does well with other dogs at fully fenced in dog parks. Apollo needs consistency with training to help learn basic commands, as he has had no formal training. He is working on recall so can't be off leash yet.
Ideal home:
Must have another young playful confident pup to show him the ropes. He's a dogs dog!
Main level living home with minimal stairs to the outside, and a home with an open floor plan (confined spaces freak him out, he used to dart through doors and hallways but he's gotten much better). He is a big boy & needs space to feel comfortable.
A big secure backyard to explore or a secure ranch/farm would be great too!
Moderate exercise needed about 45 minutes per day, if you're looking for a highly active dog, this one's not for you. Because of their thick double coats Great Pyrenees can overheat fairly easily, so it's best to not exercise them in sweltering temperatures, and be sure to give them access to fresh water at all times.
A family familiar with the breed, understands their personality traits & their needs. His breed shines through his personality. He loves spending time outside, protecting the "flock". He is stubborn at times and can be indifferent. He is vocal at any sign of life or noise.
A family that understands Pyrenees are prone to bloat, so they must be fed in a raised feeder and shouldn't be fed directly before or after exercise. Feeding multiple small meals a day can also help prevent bloat.
A family that understands & is prepared to deal with future potential joint issues large breed dogs are prone to (ex. hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia).
