Meet Apollo

***REQUIRES A FENCED IN YARD***

Apollo is a male harlequin 8 year old dane who is the definition of beautiful and loyal to his humans.

Apollo is a people lover. He deals with a bit of separation anxiety but is not destructive and settles down quickly. Apollo's nerves get the best of him when there are changes in his comfort zone, loud noises, and/or spastic behavior - he requires a “safe” spot to retreat to. He loves visitors but if the visit turns into a party he will seek his quiet spot. While Apollo enjoys the occasional visit and lovins’ from children his nerves hit high gear when there is running/jumping/yelling/ball playing involved (general kid actions) **For this reason - We will not be adopting him to anyone with young kids under 12. No exceptions.**

Apollo prefers his home environment. Although he loves to get his leash on and go for a walk/ride his nerves kick into HIGH gear when out and about. He is a home body at heart and feels safe at home. Foster mom has seen NO reactivity towards humans even when tested with several visitors. BUT she has a normally quiet home and 2 “safe” spots for Apollo. What visitors have dropped by he chitters with excitement, hug and leans in demanding attention before laying down to observe the action.

Apollo is in a foster home with a single lady, her brother, 3 cats, and a very chill dane sister (Penny). After a long integration (with a basket muzzle) his new fur family and he are doing great. The cats come up to him and headbutt him - although he still seems confused by their behavior at times. After weeks of attempting to assert dominant behaviors Apollo and Penny now get along like peas and carrots. They even go bark at the imaginary enemies outside and bask in the sun together too. He has free roam of the house at all times.

Apollo has fear-based reactivity with other canines. He would do best in a household as the only dog OR with a carefully managed integration of another dog. As evidenced with Penny, he will do well with another low-no dominant behavior dog. In addition to Penny, Apollo had 4 temporary foster brothers/sisters who liked to play. He did well with all after muzzled heavily supervised integration time. He plays VERY hard and his dominant behaviors come on VERY strong, intimidating most dogs, potentially causing a reaction in a less than rock solid dog. The fosters were rock solid dogs which allowed Apollo to be himself and understand that not all dogs will react negatively to his dominant behavior. Apollo NEEDS to know his human is in control and he can trust the other dog. Apollo is NOT, and never will be, a dog park dog. He will need a strong leader to show him everything is ok. He looks to his people for reassurance and feeds off of your emotions.

Apollo is an excellent adult companion and very attuned to his human(s). He’s observant, protective, and loving. He is an excellent snuggler and couch warmer too. His favorite thing in the world is to lay in a bed full of pillows. He loves to immerse himself in all the pillows, it makes him feel safe.

Apollo is really looking for someone who will allow him to live out his remaining years in peace and quiet without a lot of hustle and bustle traffic and/or competition for attention and love. He's such a loving, loyal companion to his humans. Could you be a good fit for him?

He’s house trained and potty trained. He is neutered and fully vaccinated and microchip. Apollo is on 2x daily carprofen for suspected age related arthritis.

Apollo’s adoption fee is $300.00. To apply to adopt Apollo please go to www.nwflgdr.com/adopt. There you can read over our adoption requirements and process before applying.

Notice: NWFLGDR does not transport. All approved adopters must agree to travel to pick up the dane in person from his or for foster parent.
