Meet ALEXANDRITE

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.ALEXANDRITE hails from Shamattawa in Northern Manitoba. He was run over by a truck and suffered serious injuries. His left front leg was crushed and had to be amputated and his front right leg was broken. He also suffered severe road rash on both his hind legs. He had his surgery in Winnipeg and he was then posted for a rescue to help him on his journey to a new life and we gladly answered that call. This little guy endured all this trauma at just 4 months of age but came out at the end of it all as though nothing had happened to him. He's the happiest, gentlest tail wagging little guy you could ever meet. He's neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and been deemed a healthy boy by our vet.
ALEXANDRITE is the happiest most loveable little guy you'll ever meet. He was going to our vets clinic twice a week for at least two months for bandage changes and he always walked excitedly through the front door wagging his tail like crazy. He absolutely loves people and always greets them with his tail wags and kisses. He's very well socialized with other dogs and is being fostered with two of them. He loves any dog he meets on his walks and will play with any dog he meets in the dog park. He hasn't formally met a cat but has seen the resident cats at a distance and doesn't seem too bothered about meeting them. If a cat is dog savvy and with a slow, monitored introduction it would be quite possible they could be friends.
ALEXANDRITE is crate trained and will sleep in one all night but will only settle in it during the day if he knows someone's around. For this reason he would suit a home with someone home must of the day. His foster has left him out of the crate for a few hours here and there during the day and he's never gotten into or destroyed anything. He's very much an adventurous boy who doesn't think he's any different to any other dog and the fact he's lost a leg has not registered with him at all. He can do just about anything other dogs can do but coming down steps/stairs can be bit of a challenge for him. For this reason his ideal home would be a one level home or even an apartment where stairs are not an issue. He would love a family who would just love him for the way he is and not see him as a dog with a disability (as we at the rescue don't, including his foster.)
ALEXANDRITE is house trained and will let you know when he has to go outside to the bathroom. He knows the basic commands like sit, shake-a-paw, stay and is basically a well mannered boy. He loves to go on walks but he doesn't need to do long ones or hikes as he'll get tired out quicker than another dog. A few short walks a day would be more beneficial for him and he does quite well on on a leash. He does tend to gobble his food down so he eats from a slow feeder but there's no issue eating around the other dogs in his foster home. He currently takes UbaVit and Hyaluronic Acid (H-A) for joint support and it is recommended that he continue to take that.
We do need you to be onboard for getting him obedience training so he can be the best he can be.
If ALEXANDRITE sounds like he would fit into your home and lifestyle then please fill out the adoption application to meet him.
