Meet Fredrick

Fredrick may look a little rough on the outside, but it's what's on the inside that counts, and this adorable teddy bear has a heart of gold! We anticipate him to be around 2-3 years old, and he definitely looks every bit a "street cat" - big chubby cheeks, a permanently wonky eye from previous injury, scarred face, but he's ready to leave his past behind him and settle into the lap of luxury as someone's spoiled housecat. He adores attention and will literally throw himself at your feet until you shower him with pets. Scratch him all over - he can't get enough! The only thing Fredrick loves more than people is food! He also has a glorious plush coat, but would appreciate help maintianing it with regular brushing.

Now, there is one more thing you should know. Fredrick has tested positive for FIV (Feline immunodeficiency virus), but this will not prevent him from living a long, happy life. The disease can only affect felines and is rarely spread to altered, friendly FIV-negative cats. It cannot be spread by sharing litter boxes, food dishes, playing or grooming. Transmission is only possible through deep puncture wounds (think non-neutered male cats fighting over territories) - Fredrick is not an aggressive cat, along he can be a bit of a bully to certain cats (mostly around meal time). He currently resides with several other felines and is getting more relaxed around them every day so we don't see him as the type to get into these types of serious scuffles with another friendly housemate. Additionally, he does not require any medicine for his condition, but since his immune system is a bit more suppressed than normal, he has the potential to get sick easier. For indoor cats, this is generally a non-issue as he will not be exposed to diseases and viruses in the safety of his home. Don't be scared by the myths people (and even some veterinarians!) spread about FIV. Take your time and do the research, and make your own decision about whether adopting an FIV cat is right for you if you have other felines at home.
