About Us
The Isle of Wight County Humane Society is an all volunteer organization that promotes responsible pet care and the humane treatment of animals in our local community. Humane Society members take in homeless and unwanted animals and provide them with foster care and medical treatment. When the animals are healthy and socialized, they are adopted into permanent homes. Our pet adoption program is very successful and we find homes for hundreds of dogs and cats every year.
The Humane Society also actively supports our county animal shelter. The shelter is owned and administered by Isle of Wight County but the Humane Society provides vaccines, medication, leashes, pet carriers and veterinary care not funded by the county. We also take animals from the shelter as part of our adoption program. Additionally, we donate “wish list” items to the shelter and have recently purchased cooling fans, heating pads, disinfectant aerators and a digital camera for the facility.
To promote our concern for animal welfare the Humane Society participates in local activities such as festivals, fairs and parades. We also place notices and advertisements in The Smithfield Times and our small “green house” donation banks have been set up in the shops and stores of many kind business owners throughout the county.
Spay and Neuter Program
The Isle of Wight County Humane Society offers assistance to county residents for the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats. We will pay a portion of the veterinary bill for those who can’t afford the full cost of altering a pet. To apply, call 357-4214 and leave a message requesting spay or neuter assistance. We will contact you by phone for details about your request.
Medical Assistance
We also offer assistance with medical costs for vaccinations and veterinary care. Call 357-4214 and record your request if your pet needs treatment you cannot provide.

Adopt A Pet
If you are considering adding a pet to your family, please visit the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter and see the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that are available for adoption. Call the shelter at 365-6318 for information. The shelter is located on Poor House Road off US-258 in Isle of Wight, midway between Smithfield and Windsor. The facility is staffed by the county and is normally open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. Call the shelter for operating hours. Take some dog and cat treats to the shelter and you’ll make a lot of new friends.
Donations
The following items are always needed and greatly appreciated:
puppy formula
kitten formula

towels and blankets
dog and cat treats.
All of the above items can be taken to the IOW County Animal Shelter or given to any Humane Society member.
As an all volunteer organization, the IOW County Humane Society depends upon the generosity of kind people in our community to fund our work. We receive no government funding and rely entirely upon private and corporate donors. We have no office, no building, no salaries and very little operating expense. All donations to our local Society are used for the care of animals in Isle of Wight County. If you can assist us in providing for these injured and abandoned animals, please send your contribution to:

We are a non-profit charitable organization. All donations are tax-deductible.
Rabies
Rabies is an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is deadly, easily transmitted and can be carried by local wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats. The best protection against rabies is to ensure that all your animals are current on their rabies shots.
Big Numbers
Approximately 5,000,000 unwanted animals are euthanized every year in the United States. In six years one dog and her offspring can potentially produce 67,000 puppies; one cat and her progeny can produce 420,000 kittens in seven years. The humane way to break these overpopulation cycles is to have animals sterilized. Do the right thing for your pets and have them spayed or neutered.
